Largest RP system ever operated in a collider

TOTEM/CT-PPS in LS2 No major upgrades planned for LS2 Data taking in Run 3 with existing detectors During LS2 we need a revision of RP movement components and possibly exchange of pots to continue the project safely after LS2. Might plan to equip as well the RP 220 near horizontals with the RF shields and circular ferrites. For the exchange of Roman Pots ask for the local removal of the beam pipe.

ALFA – LS2 The long term plan for ALFA is to finish the physics program, total cross section and luminosity measurement, in Run 2. No plans for LS2 But note Possible AFP refurbishment plan Still have the 14 TeV total cross section on their list…

AFP Plans for LS2 EYETS 2016-2017 Current Status:
New Stations UHV qualified. New Stations installed in 6L1! Old detectors re-surveyed and extracted ! 2016 2017 LS2 W,Z,γ SD DPEjj CEPjj γγ→ W,Z,γ EYETS XRP Far –218m XRP Near –206m PatchPanel –212m 19JAN2017 LS2

AFP Plans for LS2 Foreseen:
Extract and refurbish detectors (4 days early in LS2 + 4 days late in LS2): new Time-of-Flight detectors! Install Single-Mode fiber bundles for clock distribution upgrade (1-2 wk) possibly routing through survey galleries? Possibly: Install BPM after NEAR Stations? (3 wks) currently no BPM after 205 m stations need to await 2017 data to show a need for another BPM would require 6L1 and 6R1 exterior pipe modifications, bakeout, surveys, … Refurbishment of ALFA stations: rad-hard detectors/electronics? (4 wks) Good for concurrent data taking & alignment (in special runs) would allow ALFA shielding to be removed … would require significant work and manpower far from sure: to be decided within ALFA, AFP, and ATLAS! 19JAN2017 LS2

TOTEM/CT-PPS in LS2 During the 2016 insertions we have validated the RPs of CT-PPS for the design luminosity of LHC. If the RP insertions continue in future up to LS2 on a regular base (as in 2016) during LS2 we need a revision of RP movement components and possibly exchange of pots to continue the project safely after LS2. Depending on the physics results and the optic settings of the machine in future, we might plan to equip as well the RP 220 near horizontals with the RF shields and circular ferrites (low mass reach). The exchange of detector packages happens on a regular basis during technical stops and during EYETS. Special attention need the cooling components (capillaries) of the detector packages as they might suffer from material fatigue.

TOTEM: LS2 Originally planned to have two cylindrical RPs per side and it could be possible, that we use LS2 to integrate such additional RP per side in the already existing mechanical frame. Furthermore, during LS1 we have not succeeded to create the two small excavations (radiation limiter) in the tunnel floor to locate radiation sensitive electronic timing components close to the detector. This might still be required, if the radiation level would limit the operation of the FPGA or other electronics This activity (if finally approved) during LS2 might require for safety reason the local removal of the beam pipe.

TOTEM: Run 3 The operation of the present TOTEM Roman Pots at high beta optics/special runs is officially foreseen until the max. possible energy of LHC has been reached, allowing to complete the approved scientific mission of TOTEM. Any future operation of the Roman Pots within the CT-PPS project at standard LHC optics will depend on the insertion limitations we find during the intensity ramps. The performance of the detector inserts in the Roman Pots under the specific radiation conditions (tracking and timing) will then determine the physics reach.

ALFA – LS2 The long term plan for ALFA is to finish the physics program, total cross section and luminosity measurement, in Run 2. No plans for LS2 Still have the 14 TeV total cross section on our list. If ALFA continues in Run 3 there are ideas about replacing the fiber detectors by Silicon pixel - this still at the speculative level Note possible refurbishment of ALFA RPs by AFP…
