4 Statement Extend elaborate Writing Strategy 1: S.E.E.
Write a sentence that answers the question or prompt. Probably the best known of all sharks is the great white shark. Add deeper meaning by writing one or two sentences that extend your answer. This explains “Why” your answer is correct. It is the third largest shark, but the most dangerous. Support your original answers with textual evidence or a specific example. When you elaborate with evidence, you prove you are Right! In the movie jaws, the great white was pictured as a fierce, intelligent, and unpredictable human-eating monster. From Dr. JAC’s Guide to Writing with Depth by Dr. Joyce Armstrong Carroll Writing Strategy 1: S.E.E.

5 Using 4 corners to generate good writing
Use chart paper to divide the class into four discussion groups: Label the chart paper: Strongly agree/yes Strongly disagree/no Agree/yes Disagree/no After presenting the question, students move into groups based on their positions. THINK – PAIR – SHARE: With a partner, think of two additional ways you can use four corners in your class.

6 Is mandatory professional development the most effective use of time for teachers on early release days? Question 1: Within 60 seconds, move into the corner that best matches your position.

7 Does standardized testing cause more harm than good?
Question 2: Within 60 seconds, move into the corner that best matches your position.

8 Many people believe that system of equation problems appear more in real world situations than any other type of equation solving problem. Is this true? Question 3: Within 60 seconds, move into the corner that best matches your position.

9 Higher level questions for math
What solution process is the best/worst? What are examples of when to use each of the possible processes? What influenced your group in choosing a variable to represented on the y-axis? What are some “Real world” applications of this type of problem?

10 Using speed dating to generate good writing
Instead of working with a group, work with three different partners to generate good writing. Three timed rotations 1 – Find a partner of a different content area (math + English = LOVE ) Answer the question 3 minutes 2 – Pick a different partner. Discuss your original answer and work together to answer the 2nd question. 5 minutes 3 – Choose another different partner. Discuss both original answers. Answer the third question. 7 minutes

11 Phone company problem Two competitive cell phone companies, Verizon wireless and at&T, provide special service rates to families who have more than two phones. For their family plan, Verizon charges $40 per month plus $0.15 per minute. At&T charges $45 per month plus $0.10 per minute for their family plan.

12 Create two equations to describe the two plans.
Question 1 Create two equations to describe the two plans.

13 Which service would be the best choice?
Question 2 Which service would be the best choice?

14 Explain how you arrived at your answer.
Question 3 Explain how you arrived at your answer.

15 Putting it all together
Use the notes you gathered during speed dating to answer the following question using the s.e.e. strategy: In comparing Verizon wireless to at&T, which company provides the most cost effective service to its customers? Support your answer with evidence.

16 Lesson planning – exit ticket
Work with your grade level team to create a real lesson using one of the strategies we learned today.
