Common core and parcc Jaclyn Cordasco
2
What is common core? The Common Core is a set of high-quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy (ELA). These learning goals outline what a student should know and be able to do at the end of each grade. - standards/
3
What is its purpose? To prepare students for college and career readiness To combine the importance of content and skills Written to create consistency among states. This holds all students to the same level of rigor and allows students to move from one state to another without creating learning gaps.
4
Who participated in writing them?
Governors and state commissioners of education Teachers had input with assistance from The National Education Association (NEA), American Federation of Teachers (AFT), National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE)
5
Misconceptions The Common Core tells teachers what they have to teach.
Teachers are still free to use their best practices and knowledge of their students to make instructional decisions. It is a national curriculum and a federal takeover of education. It is not a curriculum. It is a set of standards. How the standards will be met is left up to schools and teachers.
6
How to read the math standards
Each grade level standard has a domain, clusters, and standards. Domain: Larger group of related standards Cluster: A subcategory beneath the domain that summarize smaller groups of related standards Standard: The individual skill or concept that defines what students should be able to achieve does a great job explaining how the standards are written and can be read here.
7
Math domains grades K-5 Counting and Cardinality (K only)
Operations and Algebraic Thinking (K-5) Numbers and Operations in Base Ten (K-5) Measurement and Data (K-5) Geometry (K-5) Numbers and Operations-Fractions (3-5)
8
Mathematics There are major clusters, minor clusters, and additional clusters in mathematics at each grade level, meaning not all content is equally emphasized. All clusters must still be addressed in instruction in order to avoid gaps in learning. Click to see the major, minor, and additional clusters for grades K-8 Clusters by Grade Level

PARcc testing Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) is an assessment created by a group of states in order to assess whether students are on track for career and college success.
