Facts 29.4 million people currently living with HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa. Two-thirds of the worlds cases 21 countries with the highest HIV rate are in Africa. In Zimbabwe and Botswana, 1 in 4 carries HIV

Facts Between 2001 and 2003 more people died of AIDS in Africa than in all the wars on the continent Each day, 6,000 Africans die from AIDS. Each day, an additional 11,000 are infected.

AIDS Today UNAIDS estimated at the end of 2007 that worldwide, there were: * 39.5 million living with HIV * 4.3 million new infections of HIV * 2.9 million deaths from AIDS Over two-thirds of HIV cases, and over 80% of deaths, were in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Some leaders don’t believe it: In South Africa, President Thabo Mbeki had long denied AIDS resulting from HIV Poverty: Spend money on food, safe water, or AIDS medicine?

In some African countries, progress is being made: For Instance, Senegal: * Problems were recognized early; * Resources were poured into fighting HIV/AIDS; and * Dealt with cultural taboos head on, using mass media to raise awareness effectively. * Government providing access to drugs was found to be more effective than people paying for them
