Starting with some facts…
1 in 5 children have a mental health problem ½ of mental health problems start by the age of 14 years ¾ have started by the age 24 years Mental health problems were rising before the internet Levels of inequality have caused big rises in mental health problems Poverty increase mental health problems

Some simple things to start with…
Get plenty of sleep Take some exercise Talk to others and be sociable Have a hobby or interest Have somebody that you can go to that you trust

Family Environment School Family is the most influential factor!

Remembering the happy times
Close your eyes and think of a time when you were most happy Who were you with? Where were you? What were you doing? How old were you? Connected Active Taken notice of Learning Being creative and playing Give 1 minute to remember and then share with the person next to you.

Being connected to others Being active Being given positive attention and being noticed Giving opportunities to learn Being creative and time to just play

Recognising and acting on when the bucket is getting empty and resilience is lowering ~ increased risk of poor mental health

Tips for parents… Keep your expectations the same
Break down bigger tasks Role play possible solutions to problems Praise your child for facing challenges Give them responsibilities Don’t take over ~ your child needs to complete it Teach your child to answer their own questions ~ model your thinking Allow them to experience anxiety as it is normal Keep your fears to yourself Show them how to use humour Have consistency between all care-givers Have clear and consistent limits and consequences
