Southeast Asia Regional Information Networks

GOFC - Regional Networks
3
LUCC – Phase I 1993 Network is established in Manila, Philippines for development of an operational methodology for monitoring LUCC Common method and data collection protocols were initiated Four case studies selected: Malaysia : Klang-Langat watershed Philippines : Magat Watershed Thailand : Mae Chaem Watershed Indonesia : Citarum Watershed 1994
4
LUCC – Phase I 1994− 1997 The internal coordination workshops conducted in rotating locations among participating countries 1998 All the participating countries have produced their country reports, in hard and soft copies. Individual countries also set their own web page in LUCC project which are linked to SEA START network
5
LUCC – Phase II 1999 Develop case studies to determine deforestation dynamics Regional network was expanded through involvement of more scientists and case studies The regional network compilation of LUCC dataset for outreach package was also strengthened through web page on LUCC project for each country. Interactive CD ROM developed in corporation with the IGBP-DIS Development of regional integrated metadata system was also initiated (SEA START RC, DIF) 2000
6
LUCC – Phase III 2001− 2002 SEARRIN Science Meeting and Field Training took place from APN funding : “Land use and land cover change in Southeast Asia” incl 7 ASEAN countries. Malaysia Philippines Vietnam Thailand Indonesia Laos Cambodia
7
Post LUCC Phase I-III 2004 SE-Asia Burnt Area Workshop in Selangor, Malaysia 2009 NASA-LCLUC Science Team Joint Meeting with MAIRS, GOFC-GOLD and SEA START in Khon Kaen Thailand

Contributions of GOFC-SEARRIN Network Members
SARI meetings were much broader with different themes; however, fire and land were always represented in which SEARRIN members have been contributing. 3 1 5 6 4 2 2013 2014 2016 2018 2015 2017 Hanoi, Vietnam Air Quality in Asia USA GOFC-Fire IT Chile Ho Chi Minh LCLUC and Emission Manila Tsukuba, Japan GHG Emission Bogor, Indonesia Chiang Mai LULUC
9
Current State of Network
All members are in contact with each other through s Website hosted by UKM terminated SARI meetings have been helpful in bringing SEARRIN researchers together in a timely manner. The network is loose (at present), however, can be strengthened anytime through an integrated project. GOFC team leadership guidance is needed.
10
Current Regional National Themes and Priorities
Fire theme is still our focus as in Southeast Asia fire problem is immense impacting regional air quality. We are interested to extend to Land Cover theme too (as in Mekong Agricultural LCLUC and Water Resources are important problems).
11
Current/Previous Major Partners and Interests
7-SEAS Campaign – In this international study relating to biomass burning emissions, several of SEARRIN members are involved. More such campaigns are needed to bring SEARRIN members together.
12
Mekong Delta: 39,000 km² 18 M. People
We are interested to extend to Land Cover theme too (as in Mekong Agricultural LCLUC and Water Resources are important problems) The Mekong Delta comprises 13 provinces of Tien Giang, Long An, Ben Tre, Vinh Long, Can Tho, An Giang, Dong Thap, Tra Vinh, Hau Giang, Soc Trang, Kien Giang, Bac Lieu and Ca Mau, with total land area about 39,000 km² that plays an important role to the sustainable socio-economic development of Viet Nam Mekong Delta: 39,000 km² 18 M. People
13
PROGRAM "SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF MEKONG DELTA” (PERIOD 2014 -2019)
Land use and land cover change Assess the potential risk of natural disasters Determining water quality Monitoring river bank change Change of natural resource and environment Climate change Impacts RS SOLUTIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT?
14
MGIS Mekong Delta Geographic Information System (MGIS)
MGIS implementation: 5 years - First stage ( ): Can Tho, Vinh Long and An Giang aims to provide the foundation for regional GIS data. - Second phase ( ): the data integration of the remaining provinces to form MGIS for making adaptation decisions MGIS B¶n ®å nÒn KhÝ hËu Thæ nhìng HiÖn tr¹ng sö dông ®Êt Nguån níc ®¸nh gi¸ vÒ kh¶ n¨ng thÝch nghi ®¸nh gi¸ vÒ kinh tÕ ®¸nh gi¸ vÒ chÝnh s¸ch x· héi ®¸nh gi¸ t¸c ®éng m«i trêng Sö dông ®Êt thÝch hîp nhÊt MGIS MGIS provides platform to integrate and exchange information concerning the sustainability in the Mekong Delta

What Could be Done by the Network with no funding
Validating We can help on validating fire/land cover data through leveraging some of our projects (however, we need a clear plan and strategy) LoS We can provide letters of support for any international projects for mutual benefit. Collaborative We can provide guidance on field studies, connect you to local researchers for effective collaborations Reg meeting We can help in organizing local/regional meetings at our place
16
01 02 03 What Could be Done by the Network with additional funding
Pilot project We can come up with a “pilot project” involving regional researchers to deliver the products as required by the GOFC team Science support We can provide science support to GOFC team on calibration, validation and testing of fire/land cover datasets. 12 Training/workshop We can use the funds for organizing training workshops on fire/land remote sensing studies which are very much needed 03 © Copyright PresentationGo.com – The free PowerPoint library

03 01 02 What Can the International community do to help?
Capacity building We would like to have more capacity building and training activities. Currently, only 1-meeting per year which seems insufficient. More focused thematic meeting/training activities will help us. GOFC International projects such as GOFC has huge reputation. GOFC team has huge expertise on fires/land cover remote sensing. Funding will be the key.. Guidance We need their science help and guidance (eg: product strengths and weakness, sharing of methodologies/systems/and how to make it operational in our countries) © Copyright PresentationGo.com – The free PowerPoint library
