Hi! I’m Susan B. Anthony! I fought for voting rights!

3 I believe in freedom of conscience. Before we learn more about my life, let’s take a look at what that term means.

4 Susan B. Anthony believed in freedom of conscience
Susan B. Anthony believed in freedom of conscience. This means that Susan believed that a person had the right to hold a viewpoint or thought independent of others' viewpoints.

Susan B. Anthony was born in Adams, Massachusetts in 1820.

Susan was born into a Quaker family in Massachusetts in Quakers are a religious group devoted to peaceful principles.

Susan’s father was against slavery. A slave is someone who is owned by another person. At this time, African Americans were slaves.

Susan’s father would not purchase cotton to use in his mill if slave labor had been used to produce the cotton.

When Susan was seventeen, she became a teacher. She was upset when she learned that she only made one-fourth of what a male teacher made doing the same job!

Our lives are very different from Susan’s life. During this time, women were treated very differently than men. Women could not vote, own property, or speak at public events.

In 1845, she moved with her parents to New York.

Members of the Anthony family were active in the anti-slavery movement. Anti-slavery Quakers met at their farm in New York almost every Sunday. They were sometimes joined by Frederick Douglass. Someone against slavery was an abolitionist.

Susan continued to teach in New York. She also started getting involved in the temperance movement and the Women’s Rights movement.

The temperance movement was the effort to make selling alcohol illegal. Susan was disappointed when the State legislature rejected a petition to pass a law limiting the sale of liquor because most of the signatures were from women.

A petition is a written document that citizens sign to support a cause.

She also started petitions to outlaw slavery. Over time she obtained 400,000 signatures. In April 1864 the Thirteenth Amendment which abolished slavery passed the Senate. An amendment is an official change or addition to a constitutional law.

Susan was introduced to Elizabeth Cady Stanton, one of the leaders of the women's rights movement in Susan attended her first women's rights convention in Syracuse, New York in 1852.

In 1866 Anthony and Stanton founded the American Equal Rights Association. In 1868 they started publishing the newspaper The Revolution in Rochester, New York. Their motto was, "Men their rights, and nothing more; women, their rights, and nothing less.” The aim of the newspaper was to establish "justice for all."

In the 1870’s, Anthony campaigned for women's suffrage on speaking tours in the West. Anthony and other women’s rights activist were arrested in Rochester in 1872 for voting.

Susan B. Anthony died in 1906 at her home in Rochester, New York. All American adult women finally got the vote with the Nineteenth Amendment, also known as the Susan B. Anthony Amendment, in 1920.

In 1920, the 19th Amendment stated that the right to vote could not be denied because of gender. An amendment is an official change or addition to a constitutional change.
