1 Chapter 3: Electromagnetic Waves and Light

2 Electromagnetic Waves – a disturbance that transfers energy through a field
DO NOT NEED matter (or medium) to transfer energy Can travel through matter (medium), such as air, water, and glass Many of the EM waves present in Earth's environment come from the Sun

3 Energy that moves in the form of EM waves is called radiation
EM waves can pass through outer space Ex: rays from the Sun travel about 150 million kilometers (93 million mi) to reach Earth

4 Electromagnetic Waves
Examples: radiation, TV & radio waves, X-rays, microwaves, lasers, energy from the sun, visible light Electromagnetic waves are considered transverse waves because they have similar characteristics; therefore, they have the same parts.

5 Electromagnetic Spectrum
The electromagnetic spectrum illustrates the range of wavelengths and frequencies of electromagnetic waves.

6 Electromagnetic Spectrum Sheet

7 1. How are EM waves different from mechanical waves. 2
1. How are EM waves different from mechanical waves? 2. What are two sources of EM waves in Earth's environment? 3. How can EM waves transfer energy differently in a material medium as compared to a vacuum?
