1 Scheme of Redemption

2 Goals of Our Study To learn how God moved from man's problem of sin to His solution of Jesus on the cross To understand how everything in the scriptures relates to, and points to, Jesus and the cross To understand how everything in the Bible reveals God to mankind - who He is and what He is like Get a better understanding of how we got here tonight on the orange carpet

3 Main concepts of our study
"Scheme of Redemption" - The plan of God, established before creation, to redeem mankind from sin View the Bible as a novel, with 66 different chapters The real division taking place at Genesis 3:6 rather than between Malachi and Matthew This division covers two drastically different worlds: The world prior to sin and the world after sin

4 Main concepts of our study
Genesis 1-2: God and perfection, man and innocence Genesis 3-12 – The Background of Redemption Genesis – Redemption through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph Exodus 1-12 – Slavery In and Judgement On Egypt

5 Recap We discussed Moses’ flight to and life in Midian We discussed his meeting God at the burning bush We discussed God being the “I AM”

6 Moses to speak to Israel’s elders
God commissions Moses to go Note the two prophesies made in Exodus 3:12 and 21: They would return to Sinai after the leave Egypt They would leave with many valuable items from the Egyptians (articles of gold, silver, and clothing)

7 Moses given power of signs
Exodus 4:1-5 – Then Moses said, “What if they will not believe me or listen to what I say? For they may say, ‘The Lord has not appeared to you.’” The Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?” And he said, “A staff.” Then He said, “Throw it on the ground.” So he threw it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from it. But the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand and grasp it by its tail” - so he stretched out his hand and caught it, and it became a staff in his hand— “that they may believe that the Lord, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you.”

8 Moses given power of signs
Exodus 4:6-7 – The Lord furthermore said to him, “Now put your hand into your bosom.” So he put his hand into his bosom, and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous like snow. Then He said, “Put your hand into your bosom again.” So he put his hand into his bosom again, and when he took it out of his bosom, behold, it was restored like the rest of his flesh.

9 Moses given power of signs
Exodus 4:8-9 – “If they will not believe you or heed the witness of the first sign, they may believe the witness of the last sign. But if they will not believe even these two signs or heed what you say, then you shall take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry ground; and the water which you take from the Nile will become blood on the dry ground.”

10 Moses given power of signs
Why are these signs necessary? In the Bible, signs, miracles, and wonders always had a specific purpose To confirm the spoken word (Mark 16:20) To prove that Jesus was the Son of God (“The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised…”) (Luke 7:22) To prove a true apostle (2 Corinthians 12:12)

11 Moses given power of signs
Note that Jesus/apostles did not dole out miracles to merely serve the needs/desires of themselves and others. It was most always used to generate belief and confirmation. Examples: Lazarus – “so that they may believe” (Jn 11:15) Paul left Trophimus sick in Miletus (2 Tim 4:20) Paul’s “thorn in the flesh”

12 Moses afraid to speak Exodus 4:10-13 – Then Moses said to the Lord, “Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither recently nor in time past, nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.” The Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes him mute or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now then go, and I, even I, will be with your mouth, and teach you what you are to say.” But he said, “Please, Lord, now send the message by whomever You will.”

13 Moses afraid to speak Exodus 4:14-17 – Then the anger of the Lord burned against Moses, and He said, “Is there not your brother Aaron the Levite? I know that he speaks fluently. And moreover, behold, he is coming out to meet you; when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart. You are to speak to him and put the words in his mouth; and I, even I, will be with your mouth and his mouth, and I will teach you what you are to do. Moreover, he shall speak for you to the people; and he will be as a mouth for you and you will be as God to him. You shall take in your hand this staff, with which you shall perform the signs.”

14 God almost kills Moses??? God has commissioned Moses with all of this, and Moses is on his way. Then, en route to Egypt… Exodus 4:24-26 – Now it came about at the lodging place on the way that the Lord met him and sought to put him to death. Then Zipporah took a flint and cut off her son’s foreskin and threw it at Moses’ feet, and she said, “You are indeed a bridegroom of blood to me.” So He let him alone. At that time she said, “You are a bridegroom of blood”— because of the circumcision.

15 God almost kills Moses??? This is another one of those pearls of wisdom that we see sewn into the scriptures In Exodus, Moses is a Christ-like figure who is poised to free Israel from their bondage Deuteronomy 18:18 – I will raise up a prophet from among their countrymen like you, and I will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him Peter affirmed this as a prophecy of Christ in Acts 3:17-26

16 God almost kills Moses??? Yet, even this great man of God, willing to serve as a deliverer of God’s people, was almost put to death by God due to His negligence of the God’s commands As we saw with Noah and Abraham, we see it again here with Moses. These great men are not enough as they themselves stand in need of the cross! God must get to the cross!

17 Moses and Aaron meet with Israel
Exodus 4:27-31 – Now the Lord said to Aaron, “Go to meet Moses in the wilderness.” So he went and met him at the mountain of God and kissed him. Moses told Aaron all the words of the Lord with which He had sent him, and all the signs that He had commanded him to do. Then Moses and Aaron went and assembled all the elders of the sons of Israel; and Aaron spoke all the words which the Lord had spoken to Moses. He then performed the signs in the sight of the people. So the people believed; and when they heard that the Lord was concerned about the sons of Israel and that He had seen their affliction, then they bowed low and worshiped.

18 Moses and Aaron confront Pharaoh
Moses and Aaron confront Pharaoh and request that the Israelites be allowed to go a 3-day’s journey into the wilderness to worship God, at God’s request Pharaoh is utterly against such a thing Exodus 5:2 – Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and besides, I will not let Israel go.”

19 Pharaoh increases labor in anger
Exodus 5:6-9 – So the same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters over the people and their foremen, saying, “You are no longer to give the people straw to make brick as previously; let them go and gather straw for themselves. But the quota of bricks which they were making previously, you shall impose on them; you are not to reduce any of it. Because they are lazy, therefore they cry out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’ Let the labor be heavier on the men, and let them work at it so that they will pay no attention to false words.”

20 Pharaoh increases labor in anger
Exodus 5:21-23 – They said to them, “May the Lord look upon you and judge you, for you have made us odious in Pharaoh’s sight and in the sight of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us.” Then Moses returned to the Lord and said, “O Lord, why have You brought harm to this people? Why did You ever send me? Ever since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done harm to this people, and You have not delivered Your people at all.”

21 Pharaoh increases labor in anger
Exodus 5:21-23 – They said to them, “May the Lord look upon you and judge you, for you have made us odious in Pharaoh’s sight and in the sight of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us.” Then Moses returned to the Lord and said, “O Lord, why have You brought harm to this people? Why did You ever send me? Ever since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done harm to this people, and You have not delivered Your people at all.”

22 Griping and complaining
This will be a continuous behavior that we will witness throughout the travels of Moses from Egypt to the crossing of the Jordan The people complain about the way things are, and Moses gets mad with God about it. At times we see Moses getting rather bold with God. When Abraham pushed, he did so rather cautiously. Moses is rather brazen! Can WE fault Israel/Moses? Why or why not?

23 God begins His actions against Pharaoh
Exodus 7:1-3 – Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I make you as God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron shall be your prophet. You shall speak all that I command you, and your brother Aaron shall speak to Pharaoh that he let the sons of Israel go out of his land. But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart that I may multiply My signs and My wonders in the land of Egypt.

24 God begins His actions against Pharaoh
Exodus 7:4-7 – When Pharaoh does not listen to you, then I will lay My hand on Egypt and bring out My hosts, My people the sons of Israel, from the land of Egypt by great judgments. The Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch out My hand on Egypt and bring out the sons of Israel from their midst.” So Moses and Aaron did it; as the Lord commanded them, thus they did. Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three, when they spoke to Pharaoh.
