5.M.NBT.03 Read, write, and compare decimals to thousandths.
2
Objective: I can read, write, and compare decimals to the thousandths.
Please say today’s objective
3
Essential Questions What is a decimal? How does the place value of a number affect its value? What is expanded notation? How is it applied using decimals?
4
SET Think about what we talked about yesterday... how do we read, speak, and write decimals Share with your shoulder partner
5
A Quick Review A decimal is part of a whole.
A decimal represents a number less than one. hundredths whole number thousandths tenths
6
Tim and Moby Let’s review what decimals are:
andoperations/decimals/
7
Expanded notation Expanded notation can help with comparing decimals
Expanded notation takes a number and uses place value to determine each digits value.
8
Let’s try expanded notation with a few together
.45 0.582 6.359
9
Compare Decimals Now that we know their place value, we can compare decimals. We can use concrete models or blocks to compare decimal values 0.6 is equal to 6/10 .60 is equal to 6/100
10
A Quick Review 0.4 (four tenths) = 0.40 (four hundredths)
Remember adding a place holder zero after the decimal point will not change the value of the number. 0.4 (four tenths) = 0.40 (four hundredths)
11
< > A Quick Review greater than less than
Do you remember what these signs mean? > greater than < less than The sign “opens up” to or “eats” the larger number.
12
When comparing 2 decimals....
1. Line up the decimal points. 2. Add place holder zeros. 3. Work from left to right!
13
comparing Decimals You need to know a decimals place value to compare them.
14
Practice Problems! < , > or = 0.032 ____ 0.04
15
Practice Problemos! < , > or = < 0.032 ____ 0.04 0.032 0.04
1. Line up the decimal points. 2. Add place holder zeros. 3. Work from left to right! < 0.032 ____ 0.04 0.032 0.04 4 is larger than 3, therefore 0.04 is larger than 0.032
16
Practice Problemos! < , > or = 4.7 ____ 4.07
17
Practice Problemos! < , > or = > 4.7 ____ 4.07 4.7 4.07
1. Line up the decimal points. 2. Add place holder zeros. 3. Work from left to right! > 4.7 ____ 4.07 4.7 4.07 7 is larger than 0, therefore 4.7 is larger than 4.07
18
Practice Problemos! < , > or = 0.06 ____ 0.060
19
Practice Problemos! < , > or = = 0.06 ____ 0.060 0.06 0.060
1. Line up the decimal points. 2. Add place holder zeros. 3. Work from left to right! = 0.06 ____ 0.060 0.06 0.060 These numbers are equivalent
20
Let’s try a few .45 _____ .54 .3 ____ .36 1.23 ____ 1.25

Closure Think about the steps you need to use to compare decimals...
On your slate write the steps you use Repeat todays objective
