Representing Decimals to the Thousandths Comparing Decimals
3.1
3
Learning Goal We will use our previous understanding of place value so that we can properly represent decimals to the thousandths. We’ll know we’ve got it when we can correctly compare two decimal numbers.
4
Vocabulary Decimal Decimal or Fraction Part Equivalent Expressions
Hundredth Place Tenth Thousandth Value Whole Part
5
What is a Decimal Number?
A decimal is a number made up of 2 parts separated by a decimal point Hundreds Decimal Tenths Tens Hundredths Units Thousandths WHOLE PART DECIMAL PART
6
What is a Decimal Number?
Just like with whole numbers, the value of each digit in a decimal number depends on its position: Whole Part Decimal Part Pos Hundreds Tens Units . tenths hundredths thousandths Digit 2 7 8 4 6 3 Value 200 70 .4 or 4/10 .06 or 6/100 .003 or 3/1000
7
What is a Decimal Number?
Decimals are expressed in base 10: = (2 x 100) + (7 x 10) + (8 x 1) + (4 x 1/10) + (6 x 1/100) + (3 x 1/1000)
8
Representing Decimals on a Number Line
To represent hundredths, divide the space between two tenths into 10 equal parts: 5.1 5.2 To represent thousandths, divide the space between two hundredths into equal parts: 5.21 5.22

Comparing Decimal Numbers
You already know how to compare integers: 27 > 23 When comparing decimal numbers, first check if one whole part is greater than the other: 22.17 < 25.17 If the whole parts are identical, then compare the decimal parts: 5.57 > 5.47 You can add zeroes to each decimal part to make sure that the numbers you’re comparing are in the same position: 5.570 > 5.475
