1 PACKING CIE Staff: Lots of students worry about what and how much to pack. Yes, you want to do the best job of packing possible—but also realize that there are stores when you get there! So don’t stress too much about remembering every little thing. Right now, we’ll go over a few major tips for packing.

2 Packing 1 carry-on 1 or two pieces of checked luggage 1 purse/laptop
Pack only what you need and can carry! Check dimensions & weight restrictions Check your airline website for guidelines Also check the TSA website: CIE STAFF Most airlines allow one carry on, one or two pieces of checked luggage, and one purse/laptop or briefcase on an international flight. But exact rules, as well as the dimensions of each bag and how much each can weigh, varies by airline. Check with yours! Also be aware that rules for international and domestic flights can vary. So if you are flying from Los Angeles to Sydney, Australia, and then from Sydney to Perth, (change this to be specific for your program) for example, the dimensions and weight restrictions might be different for the different flights. Make sure you know the rules for all your flights. You may be allowed two checked bags on the international flight but only one (free) on the domestic flight. Or the carry-on size for the domestic flight may be smaller than the international flight. Be sure you know about ALL legs of the flight! There are lots of restrictions as to what and what size of personal items you can put in your carry on. Check it out at And of course, you have to carry everything you pack—so pack only what you need.

3 Packing Dark Colors Layer Conservative
Remember power converters/adapters Save room for souvenirs! CIE STAFF If you pack mostly darker colors, they will show fewer travel stains. And bringing things you can layer will save a lot of room in your suitcase. Also, remember that you want to dress on the conservative side, so as not to play into negative stereotypes. If you are bringing electrical equipment, including a laptop, be sure that you have both a power converter, if your host country electrical wiring has different voltage than we do here. And research plug adapters to be sure you have a plug that will fit the sockets. And remember, you’ll want to bring new things back with you. Maybe you want to pack a ratty towel or two, rather than a nice one, so you won’t feel bad leaving it behind . . .

4 EXPERT ADVICE on PACKING
Let’s look at some expert advice. This video gives some great tips on packing well: This one shows a packing pro in action!

5 Packing Carry On Money Belt Flight Itinerary Medications
Change of Clothes Small Toiletries Money Belt Passport Credit/debit cards Local currency CIE STAFF One thing the videos did not address specifically is what to pack in your carry on. In your carry-on, you want your flight itinerary. This is particularly important if you need to change planes. Any prescription medications, plus any over-the-counter meds. Make sure they are in their original containers, and for the prescription meds, have a doctor’s note, explaining what they are for. You’ll want a change of clothes, and maybe two or three pairs of underwear. If your luggage gets lost along the way Enough said. Again, things to tie you over for a day, or two, or three, if your luggage takes a longer route than you do to its destination. This is a money belt (show). Always wear it under your clothes—otherwise, you might as well just carry things in your purse or wallet. In it you want: Your actual passport. You should also carry a photocopy of the passport in your carry on. Your credit/debit cards Some local currency. They talked about that in the money & budgeting skit this morning.
