Ottoman Empire ot-uh-muhn em-pire (Latin imperāre = to command) Controlled areas in N Africa, SW Asia, and S Europe. They were very powerful in the 1500s & 1600s and controlled their Islamic empire from the city of Constantinople (in modern day Turkey). The Ottoman Empire lost its power after WWI.
