2. Miguel de Cervantes 29 September 1547 – 22 April 1616
was a Spanish novelist, poet, and playwright
His major work, Don Quixote, considered to be the first modern European novel, is a classic of Western literature, and is regarded amongst the best works of fiction ever written. 
His influence on the Spanish language has been so great that the language is often called la lengua de Cervantes ("the language of Cervantes")
He had a crazy and adventurous life:
Worked in a church in rome
Joined the Spanish Navy
Captured by pirates – spent 5 years in captivity until his parents and some catholic nuns paid his ransom
Worked as a Purchasing Agent for the King of Spain, also as a Tax Collector – problems with his accounts landed him in jail in south Spain (sevilla)
While in jail, started to write Don Quixote – was later freed, finished the novel and published it
Had success a writer (very rare) and is buried in a convent in Madrid

Studied to become a doctor, but had an accident and was bed-ridden in a full body cast for 3 months – to stop boredom, she began to paint
even after she recovered, she suffered from immense pain for the rest of her life
Best known for her self- portraits
