1 JEHOIAKIM Jeremiah 36:21-25

2 The Sins of Jehoiakim

3 He had no respect for God’s Word
13 Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness And his chambers by injustice, Who uses his neighbor's service without wages And gives him nothing for his work, 14 Who says, ‘I will build myself a wide house with spacious chambers, And cut out windows for it, Paneling it with cedar And painting it with vermilion.’ 15 “Shall you reign because you enclose yourself in cedar? Did not your father eat and drink, And do justice and righteousness? Then it was well with him. He had no respect for God’s Word

4 He had no respect for God’s Word
16 He judged the cause of the poor and needy; Then it was well. Was not this knowing Me?” says the Lord. 17 “Yet your eyes and your heart are for nothing but your covetousness, For shedding innocent blood, And practicing oppression and violence.” 18 Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah: “They shall not lament for him, Saying, ‘Alas, my brother!’ or ‘Alas, my sister!’ They shall not lament for him, Saying, ‘Alas, master!’ or ‘Alas, his glory!’ 19 He shall be buried with the burial of a donkey, Dragged and cast out beyond the gates of Jerusalem. Jeremiah 22:13-19 He had no respect for God’s Word

5 He had no respect for God’s Word
for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:21 He had no respect for God’s Word

6 He Killed the Prophet Urijah
Now there was also a man who prophesied in the name of the Lord, Urijah the son of Shemaiah of Kirjath Jearim, who prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah. 21 And when Jehoiakim the king, with all his mighty men and all the princes, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death; but when Urijah heard it, he was afraid and fled, and went to Egypt. 22 Then Jehoiakim the king sent men to Egypt: Elnathan the son of Achbor, and other men who went with him to Egypt. He Killed the Prophet Urijah

7 He Killed the Prophet Urijah
23 And they brought Urijah from Egypt and brought him to Jehoiakim the king, who killed him with the sword and cast his dead body into the graves of the common people. 24 Nevertheless the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, so that they should not give him into the hand of the people to put him to death. Jeremiah 26:20-24 He Killed the Prophet Urijah

8 Jehoiakim’s Selfish & Wicked Example

9 Opportunity to turn the nation to God
And they went to the king, into the court; but they stored the scroll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe, and told all the words in the hearing of the king. 21 So the king sent Jehudi to bring the scroll, and he took it from Elishama the scribe's chamber. And Jehudi read it in the hearing of the king and in the hearing of all the princes who stood beside the king. Jeremiah 36:20-21 Opportunity to turn the nation to God

10 Opportunity to turn the nation to God
Now the king was sitting in the winter house in the ninth month, with a fire burning on the hearth before him. 23 And it happened, when Jehudi had read three or four columns, that the king cut it with the scribe's knife and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the scroll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth. 24 Yet they were not afraid, nor did they tear their garments, the king nor any of his servants who heard all these words. 25 Nevertheless Elnathan, Delaiah, and Gemariah implored the king not to burn the scroll; but he would not listen to them Jeremiah 36:22-25 Opportunity to turn the nation to God

11 Opportunity to turn the nation to God
Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. Matthew 24:35 Opportunity to turn the nation to God

12 The Anvil By John Clifford

13 Last eve I paused beside a blacksmith's door, And heard the anvil ring the vesper chime; Then looking, I saw upon the floor, Old hammers worn with beating years of time. "How many anvils have you had," said I, "To wear and batter all these hammers so?" "Just one," said he and then with twinkling eye, The anvil wears the hammers out, you know." "And so," I thought, "The anvil of God's Word, For ages skeptic blows have beat upon, Yet, though the noise of falling blows was heard, The anvil is unchanged, the hammers gone."

14 Opportunity to turn the nation to God
Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: “He shall have no one to sit on the throne of David, and his dead body shall be cast out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night. 31 I will punish him, his family, and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring on them, on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and on the men of Judah all the doom that I have pronounced against them; but they did not heed.” ’ Jeremiah 36:30-31 Opportunity to turn the nation to God

15 Jehoiakim – to big for his own good.
1. He was to big, too full of pride to listen to reasonable men of God warning him, like Jeremiah. 2. He was too big, too full of pride to listen to God’s word. 3. He was too big, too full of pride to hold the sit of king for long. 4. The words of Isaiah speak truth when you consider the example of Jehoiakim. Jehoiakim – to big for his own good.

16 Jehoiakim – to big for his own good.
9 That this is a rebellious people, Lying children, Children who will not hear the law of the Lord; 10 Who say to the seers, “Do not see,” And to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us right things; Speak to us smooth things, prophesy deceits. Isaiah 30:9-10 Jehoiakim – to big for his own good.

17 Lessons For Us Today

18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.
Proverbs 16:18 Pride is a Killer of Men

19 We must live in accordance to God’s word
13 The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate. Proverbs 8:13 We must live in accordance to God’s word

20 1. There are many lessons with Jehoiakim, one is abundantly clear, rebellion against God comes at a price. Therefore thus says the Lord concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: “He shall have no one to sit on the throne of David, and his dead body shall be cast out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night. Jeremiah 36:30 Conclusion

21 There are many lessons with Jehoiakim, one is abundantly clear, rebellion against God comes at a price. That price is one you do not want to pay, or you shouldn’t be willing to pay. Conclusion
