Introduction Ireland is the 3rd largest island in Europe and although English is widely spoken, it’s official language is Irish Gaelic. Some of the symbols that represent Ireland include the Green Shamrock, The Harp, and the Celtic Cross.

Geography Ireland is the 20th largest island In the world, situated in the North Atlantic Ocean and is separated from Great Britain by the Irish Sea. The country is divided into two parts: The independent Ireland Northern Island which is part of the united kingdom. Ireland contains a basin surrounded by low mountains with the highest peak being 1041 metres. The main river, the Shannon, flows North Central to southwest, approximately 386 kilometres, to the Atlantic.

Major Cities: The capital City of Ireland is Dublin. It is the 5th largest city. It is divided into two parts: north side and south side. Cork is the 2nd largest city of Ireland and Limerick is the 5th most popular city. Kilkenny is a popular tourist destination for it’s cultural life and is home to Kilkenny castle. Galway is famous for its traditional street performances and festivals e.g The Art Festival, The Astronomy Festival and The Spirit of The Voice Festival. Waterford is the oldest city and is home to the oldest civic building in Ireland, Reginald’s Tower.

Flora and Fauna Ireland is home to many well-known species such as the Hedgehog, Fox and Badger. Other species include the Irish Hare, Pine Marten, Red Deer and marine life such as sharks, dolphins and turtles. In the medieval times, Ireland was covered in forests that consisted of oak, beech, pine and birch trees. Wild Flowers and rare grasses such as Spartina Anglica can also be found in Ireland.
