9/28/17 Combining Variable Expressions
DO NOW Combining Unlike Terms: subtract the smaller from the larger term, use the sign from the larger term. 1) = 2) = 3) = 4) = 5) = 6) =

Think: 30 Seconds Write: 30 Seconds What is a variable?
Thought Question: Think: 30 Seconds Write: 30 Seconds What is a variable? AP

What are we doing Today OBJECTIVE: WE WILL be able to define, translate & combine variables & expressions WHY?: Variables are at the heart of math ESSENTIAL UNDERSTANDINGS: 1). A variable is a value we haven’t yet defined. 2). We can translate math into English. 3). Variable expressions can be combined and solved AP
4
Variables Variables all have values; it is just unknown. A variable is an undefined value. You can use any letter to represent this variable. Most commonly we see X. Why did Malcom X use X as a last name? AP
5
Translating Expressions
An expression is a math phrase. Examples: 3 + 2, 9 x 8, 5X, N – 5 Expressions with a variable are called Variable Expressions. We will be translating these into English. Example: N + 5 = A number plus five. AP
6
Steps to translating expressions to English
1). A variable is usually translated as “a number” 2). Box the operation and translate that: plus, minus, times, divided by AP
7
Lets Do These Together Translate the expressions: 1). 6x 2). B – 5 3). 6 ÷ Y 4). V + 10 5). 8N 6) ÷ X AP
8
Translating English into Expressions
1). Underline the operation vocabulary 2). “A Number” translates into a variable Examples: 7 times a number -> 7x A number split into 3 -> x/3 AP
9
Translate into expressions
1). A number minus 4 2). 12 times a number 3). Six added to a number 4). 19 divided by a number 5). A number cut into six 6). A number less five 7). Ten with a number added AP
10
Procedure for Combining Terms
Procedure for adding: 1). Draw a symbol under terms that can be combine. 2). Change all subtraction to addition by KFC Example: 8X + 15x + 4x 1). 4B + 4A + 6B - 2B 2) C – 2C C AP
11
Problem 1 : Combining 1). 2A + 4A AP
12
Problem 2 2). 5X + 10 – 3X X = AP
13
Problem 3 : Combining 3). 4G + G G – 2G = AP
14
Problem 4 4). 2 + XT+ 2XT - T = AP
15
Problem 5 5) Y+ 7XY = AP
16
Problem 6 6) X – 3X = AP
17
Problem 7 7) YX – 2Y YX= AP
18
Problem 8 8). 4 – XY + X X = AP
