1
Cell Cycle Essential Standards
Bio Analyze how cells grow and reproduce in terms of interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis
2
Cell Division in Prokaryotes
Binary fission is the process of cell division in prokaryotes.
3
Cell Division in Eukaryotes
Cell Cycle The cell cycle is the repeating set of events in the life of a cell. The cell cycle consists of cell division and interphase. Cell division in eukaryotes includes nuclear division, called mitosis, and the division of cytoplasm, called cytokinesis.
4
Interphase Interphase consists of
G1 – growth S - DNA replication G2 - preparation for cell division, chromosomes start to coil up The cell spends most of its time in interphase
5
Control of cell division
Cell division in eukaryotes is controlled by many proteins. Control occurs at three main checkpoints.
6
Cancer Cancer may result if cells do not respond to control mechanisms. Cancer is an overgrowth of cells. Benign – cancer does not leave its original site
7
Cancer Malignant – cancer spreads to other places in the body
Chemotherapy – use of drugs to stop cells from replicating Your body gets rid of cancerous cells all the time but when you are diagnosed with cancer you missed one
