Just nine monosaccharides are responsible for building nearly all mammalian glycans.
glucose, galactose, mannose N-acetylglucosamine, N-acetylgalactosamine xylose glucuronic acid fucose sialic acid All are six-membered rings (5 carbons, 1 oxygen) varying in the substituents at each carbon (mostly hydroxyls). Seven are closely structurally related to glucose.
