2 Sectors are categories of the kinds of work that people do

3 Primary Sector: Work in this sector involves harvesting or extracting natural resources from the earth Ex: farming, fishing, mining, forestry

6 Secondary Sector: Work in this sector involves using materials from the primary sector and using them in construction and manufacturing

10 Tertiary Sector: This sector includes people who work in jobs that provide services to others: Ex: Doctors, nurses, bus drivers, city workers, government employees, teachers, retail sales, etc..

12 Quaternary Sector: Jobs in this sector involve working with ideas and information – using and developing new technologies Software designers, communications companies, inventors, etc.

15 Diversified economy: An economy that has a good balance of jobs from each sector – not equal balance Ex: Most jobs in tertiary and quaternary, fewest in primary and seconday

16 Most countries start out with most jobs in primary, then secondary, moving towards diversification when most jobs are in the tertiary and quaternary areas.

17 Statistics: Statistics are information in the form of numbers
Ex: graphs are a good way to show trends in statistics

19 Trend: A trend is a pattern of change over time

20 Global Economy: When countries trade with each other to get things they need and want, they become part of the global economy

21 How does this affect a country?
Countries that trade with each other have to try to stay on good political terms If one country decides to do something different, it will affect other countries too EX: price of oil

24 Social trends: Are important ideas in society that can make a difference in how people choose to live Ex: concern for environment - cars - energy Buy products that are created and sold ethically – no sweat shops Fair Trade products

38 Demographics: Demographics are statistics about people and groups of people (the population) Helps economists figure out what is going to happen in the economy

EX: aging population More health care needed More people retiring – more jobs available EX: how much money people make What kinds of products will they want to buy Lifestyle choices?

40 Economic Forecast Trying to understand what the economy will be in the future Economists use all the available economic information including demographics and social trends to help them make an ECONOMIC FORECAST.
