The IDITAROD Race 2016 By Caitlin O.

INTRODUCTION The IDITAROD race started when people in Nome were getting the sickness Dephira. To get the medicine they had to get to Anchorage by Sled dogs. The Sled dogs saved the people from dieing! Mostly the kids were going to die. So everyone was saved.

DOGS The dogs would wear coats, collars, and dog shoes which are booties They used mostly huskies They start off with 16 dogs The dogs sleep in hay, grass, and sticks and if they get sick or hurt they have to drop out

Checkpoints & Routes There are 22 checkpoints, the first is Anchorage and the last is Nome There are 2 routes, the southern route and the northern route They start at Anchorage At each checkpoint they make sure the dogs are ok They end at Nome Miles: 975 in 2016

AWARDS The Red Lantern Award- Presented to the last musher to finish the race GCI Dorothy G. Page Halfway Award- Presented to the first musher to reach the halfway checkpoint which this year was Iditarod PenAir Spirit of Alaska Award-Presented to the first musher to reach McGrath Wells Fargo Bank Alaska Gold Coast Award- Present to the first musher to reach the “Gold Coast” community of Unalakleet
