1 Conditional sentences with would

2 Based on the CHAPTER BART THE GENIUS”, answer this question in small groups…
What is the main point of the clip, do you think? Do you think what Bart did about the test was OK? If you were Bart Simpson, would you cheat on your intelligent test? Why? Why not?

3 Look at the question again, what conditional is that?
If you were the main character, would you do the same thing? Why? Why not? That’s the second conditional… When do we use the second conditional?

4 If you don’t know, try to guess with the help of these examples…
If he had more money, he would buy a bigger car.

5 And what about with this one?
He would do great at the school, if he studied hard.

6 After watching the pics and the sentences, when do we use the second conditional?
If he had more money, he would buy a bigger car. He would do great at the school, if he studied hard. We use conditional sentences with would to talk about imaginary or impossible situations. If I had millions dollars, I'd give a lot to charity.

7 Notice that: If I lived in Japan, With the if clause: The past simple is used. lived I would eat sushi every day. In the main clause: We use would + infinitive without to Would eat

8 We can change the order of the if clause and the main clause…
If I were the president, I would reduce taxes. I would reduce taxes if I were the president.

9 We can use were instead of was after I, he, she, it
If my brother were here now, he’d know what to do.

10 We often use if I were you…to give advice…
If I were you, I would stop eating junk food.

11 We can use might/could instead of would
If he were cleverer , he might/could not ruin his brother’s company.

12 Let’s practice!
