Objectives of WP1 (GIS Analysis)
describe geographically the state of environmental services (supply and demand) in the Andes and Amazon, including important biodiversity areas and their condition To describe geographically the distribution of the various forms of poverty (water, land, financial) in the Andes and Amazon To analyse geographically the interactions between the current provision of environmental services and the level of poverty and identify geographically the most important environmental services for the wellbeing of poor To indicate where and how human interactions may be impacting upon the provision of environmental services to the poor, locally or ‘downstream’ To indicate which data and tools are available to model the outcome of scenarios for management interventions aiming to sustain ecosystem functions with particular emphasis on their capacity to alleviate poverty. To make available the datasets, results and analyses in a readily usable GIS form as a baseline

Environmental Services investigated
We will address at least the following environmental services: a) The provision of water (quality, quantity, timing), b) The regulation of the climate system (rainfall, temperature, cloud cover); c) The maintenance of soil productivity and prevention of soil erosion; d) The reduction and amelioration of climatic, hydrological and geomorphic hazards (landslides, floods); e) The provision of non-timber sustainable forest products; important biodiversity areas, ecotourism and basic ecosystem services. In each case we will investigate STATE (demand and supply) and HUMAN IMPACTS, REVIEW ASSESSMENT TOOLS and MAKE DATA AVAILABLE.
