1 What to do… Turn to page 26 in your note packet
Think About It… (Do not write this down) What happens to a birthday balloon on a cold winter day? Why? Demo

2 Gas Laws Chapter 8, Sections 1 & 2
Standard: Compare the particle arrangement and type of particle motion associated with different states of matter Apply an equation to determine the density of an object based on its mass and volume.

3 Temperature, volume, & pressure
Temperature is a measure of how fast the particles in an object are moving. Volume is the amount of space that an object takes up. The amount of force exerted on a given area of surface is called pressure.

4 Gas Behavior Laws Boyle's law states : that for a fixed amount of gas at a constant temperature - as the pressure of a gas increases, the volume decreases by the same amount. (inversely proportional) P = V

5 Boyle’s Law

6 Real life connection – Ears popping with altitude change.

7 Charles's law states : If the pressure of gas is kept constant - the volume or temperature will increase by the same proportion as the other. (directly proportional)

8 Charles’s Law

9 Real life connection –

10 What do you think? Boyle’s law states that for a fixed amount of gas at a constant temperature, a. the volume of the gas is inversely related to pressure. b. the volume of the gas is directly related to pressure. c. the volume of the gas is directly related to temperature.

11 Plasma Plasma is a gas-like mixture of positively and negatively charged particles. Plasma is found naturally in the sun stars and lightning. Heating a substance to above 5000 °C produces plasma!

12 What do you think? Balloons can be twisted into shapes because…. a. The volume of a gas is constant. B. Particles of gas can be compressed. C. Volume is measured in two dimensions.

13 Do! solid liquid gas Gas and liquid
As pressure increases, volume decreases As temperature increases, volume also increases

14 Keys to Understanding Write at least 3 sentences
Summarize the notes in your OWN WORDS Explain the main ideas from the lesson
