Overall Theme After and during WWI, debates about the nation’s role in the world, how to achieve national security and pursuing American interests intensified.

Big Idea 1 Even after deciding neutrality, the US entered WWI in response to Woodrow Wilson’s call for defense, humanitarian and democratic principles.

Effects WWI had on America
Sinking of Lusitania (1915) Germany waged submarine warfare under the suspicion of the U.S. smuggling arms National Defense Act (1916) Updated Militia Act which expanded the size and scope National Guard Zimmerman Telegram (1917) Intercepted from Germany before America entered US Proposed alliance between Germany and Mexico before Selective Service Act (1917) The government drafted people Wilson’s 14 Points (1918) Declared WWI was a moral battle and was necessary for peace “He kept us out of war”- Wilson's campaign slogan

Big Idea 2 America’s role in combat was limited however the presence of American forces helped tip the balance of conflict in favor of the Allies.

John Pershing started it Individualism America wanted to fight alongside Americans, even though they were on foreign soil Liberty Loan Drives War bonds Sold to Americans in an effort to raise money for the war with the promise that America would pay the citizens back with interest

Big Idea 3 Despite Wilson’s involvement in postwar negotiations, the senate refused to ratify the Treaty of Versailles or join the League of Nations.

Big Idea 4 After WWI, the United States wanted a foreign policy that included peace treaties, select military intervention and international intervention whilst maintaining isolation.

Washington Naval Conference- ( )- The largest naval powers had a conference in Washington D.C. To discuss naval disarmament and ways to relieve tensions in East Asia Dawes Plan (1924)- Short-term economic benefits for Germany, Lightened the reparations from World War One Kellogg Briand Pact (1928)- International agreement in which signatory states promised not to use war to resolve disputes or conflict, to prevent another World War, also known as the Pact of Paris Hawley Smoot Tariff (1930)- raised U.S. taxes on exported goods which caused Europe to raise their tariffs

Big Idea 5 The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor caused the United States to enter WWII, which sparked more concern about fascism, totalitarianism and the Nazi party.

Involvement with other countries
Japanese invasion of Manchuria (1931) Japanese had claimed Chinese soldiers sabotaged the railway so they attacked and invaded the Chinese city of Manchuria. This lead to Japan leaving the League of Nations Stimson Doctrine (1932) U.S. federal government policy that refused to recognize land that China or Japan had taken by force Neutrality Acts of A series of acts that were made to limit U.S. involvement in wars. No exporting arms or anything for war (1935) Arms trade with Spain was outlawed (1937) Lifted arms embargo (1939) “Quarantine the Aggressor” speech German invasion of Poland (1939) Started WWII Pearl Harbor 1941 Caused U.S. to enter WWII
