2 Bell Work 8/17/09 Please answer these questions in your science journal under the bell work section.
Is a cactus alive? Is a seed alive? Is the air we breathe alive? Explain what you think it means for something to be alive.

3 Candle Activity 8/17/09 Procedure Carefully light one candle.
Sit quietly and observe the candle. Make these observations in the lab section of your science journal What does the flame do? What happens to the wax? Discuss these questions with your group and record the answers in your science journal How does the candle seem alive? How do you know for sure that it is not?

4 Vocabulary Make a T chart in the Notes part of your science journal
Organism (p.9) – Any individual form of life that is capable of growing and reproducing. Unicellular (p.11) – An organism that is made up of a single cell. Multicellular (p.11) – An organism that is made up of many (more than one) cells. Microscope (p.12) – An instrument that makes an object appear larger than it is. Bacteria (p.14) – A large group of one-celled organisms that sometimes cause disease.
