An Inductive Bible Study
Ephesians 1:1-14 An Inductive Bible Study
2
Background Ephesians is one of the mountains peaks of Biblical revelation and has a unique place among Paul’s letters. Rather than being hammered out on the anvil of doctrinal controversy or pastoral problems as many of Paul’s other letters were, Ephesians conveys the impression of a rich overflow of revelation in the growing out of Paul’s personal prayer life. Paul wrote this letter while in prison on behalf of Christ. (3:1, 4:1, 6:20), most likely at Rome. Ephesians has numerous affinities with Colossians and probably was penned shortly after Colossians. Both letters may have been carried simultaneously to their destination by a co-worker of Paul’s named Tychcus (6:21; cf. Col 4:7). It is commonly believed that Paul wrote Ephesians with a wider readership in mind than just the church in Ephesus- perhaps intending it to serve as a circular letter for churches throughout the province of Asia. Originally each church in Asia Minor may have inserted its own name in 1:1, testifying to the relevance of its profound message for all true churches of Jesus Christ. Many think Ephesians is the so-called letter to the Laodicea's mentioned by Paul in Colossians 4:16. (Life in the Spirit Study Bible, KJV, Zondervan).

12
Purpose of Writing Paul’s immediate purpose for writing Ephesians is implied in 1: He prayerfully longs for his readers to advance in their faith, love, wisdom, and revelation of the Father of glory. He earnestly desires that they grow in Christian character and live lives worthy of the Lord Jesus Christ (i.e. 4:1-3; 5:1-2). Paul therefore, seeks to strengthen their faith and spiritual foundations by revealing the fullness of God’s eternal purpose of redemption “in Christ.” (1:3-14; 3:10-12) for the church (1:22- 23; (Life in the Spirit Study Bible, KJV, Zondervan)

Ephesians 1:1-6 (NKJV) 7 Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, To the saints who are in Ephesus, and faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.

Ephesians 1:1-6 (GW) 8 From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by God’s will. To God’s holy and faithful people who are united with Christ in the city of Ephesus. 2 Good will[b] and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ are yours! 3 Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! Through Christ, God has blessed us with every spiritual blessing that heaven has to offer. 4. Before the creation of the world, he chose us through Christ to be holy and perfect in his presence. 5 Because of his love he had already decided to adopt us through Jesus Christ. He freely chose to do this 6 so that the kindness[c] he had given us in his dear Son would be praised and given glory.

Ephesians 1:7-14 (NKJV) 8 7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, 9 having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed In Himself, 10 that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both[a]which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him. 11 In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, 12 that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory. 13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who[a] is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

Ephesians 1:7-14 (GW) 9 7 Through the blood of his Son, we are set free from our sins. God forgives our failures because of his overflowing kindness. 8 He poured out his kindness by giving us every kind of wisdom and insight 9 when he revealed the mystery of his plan to us. He had decided to do this through Christ. 10 He planned to bring all of history to its goal in Christ. Then Christ would be the head of everything in heaven and on earth. 11 God also decided ahead of time to choose us through Christ according to his plan, which makes everything work the way he intends. 12 He planned all of this so that we who had already focused our hope on Christ would praise him and give him glory. 13 You heard and believed the message of truth, the Good News that he has saved you. In him you were sealed with the Holy Spirit whom he promised. 14 This Holy Spirit is the guarantee that we will receive our inheritance. We have this guarantee until we are set free to belong to him. God receives praise and glory for this.
