1
Leaking Underground Storage Tanks
are mostly at gas stations. The pollutants are commonly volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as benzene, ethyl benzene, toluene, and xylenes from petroleum products.
3
These are counties with contaminated
lakes, rivers or groundwater. The contamination comes from a variety of sources, including old industrial sites, landfills, pesticides, oil & gas drilling sites, etc. and contain a variety of pollutants.
4
Counties without contaminated landfill sites are:
Keweenaw, Crawford, Antrim, Oscoda, Ogemaw, and Missaukee.
6
with no Superfund sites.
Total number of Superfund Sites in Michigan: 80
7
These are sites of known contamination.
Most are storage facilities. It is very likely that many more sites contaminated by pesticides and herbicides exist, but they have not yet been documented by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
8
Residential Wells with Nitrate Contamination
These are known sites of groundwater contamination by nitrates. Nitrate contamination may be caused by fertilizer applied to cropland or lawns, and from human or animal wastes. Source: Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (2005)
9
Residential Wells with Contamination
from Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) These are known sites of groundwater contamination by Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). VOC contamination may be a result of: industrial solvent release leaking landfill chemical transportation spill fuel spill leak from fuel storage tank illegal waste disposal VOCs do not occur naturally in ground water...
