1 1776 The Fight For New York

2 1776 – New York City During the summer of 1776 – Great Britain sends 32,000 troops to New York City Under Command of William Howe

3 1776 – New York City Great Britain hoped that the armies sheer size would scare the patriots George Washington was now in command of the Continental Army

4 1776 – New York City Washington only had 20,000 soldiers
BUT they were determined to fight

5 1776 – New York City Although the Continentals showed bravery – they ran out of supplies and were overwhelmed by the British Washington’s men were starving and had little clothing for the upcoming winter

6 New York City 1776 Washington retreats – the army survives but are in terrible shape Washington takes him men into Pennsylvania The war looks like it could SOON be over

7 1776 – The Battle of Trenton After New York – Washington knew he had to do something Out of his army of 20,000 – only around 3,000 remained ALSO – many of the men’s enlistments would be up on December 31st Washington needed a plan – a way to gain his men’s confidence and hope

9 1776 – The Battle of Trenton General Howe settled his army in New York for the winter Howe sent 2,000 Hessians to keep an eye out on the Continentals Hessians are German Mercenaries (hired Soldiers)

10 1776 – The Battle of Trenton He plans on attacking when the Delaware River freezes over and he can march over to Pennsylvania and finish the war Washington sees his chance

11 1776 – The Battle of Trenton A NEW PLAN – For the first time Washington was going on the ATTACK Washington knew the Hessians would be CELEBRATING Christmas all day and night On CHRISTMAS Night 1776, Washington and his men rowed across the icy DELAWARE River
