From Data to Knowledge: Biodiversity and Ecosystem the Ecopotential scenario P. Blonda, P. Mazzetti/ 23rd October 2017
2
ECOPOTENTIAL at a glance
Improving future ecosystem benefits through earth observations What question are you answering? State and pressures of ecosystems and ecosystem services? ECOPOTENTIAL aims at creating a unified framework for ecosystem studies and management of protected areas (PA) Focus on internationally recognized PAs in Europe and beyond in a wide range of biogeographic regions Assess the current state and estimate the future evolution of ecosystem services by applying macro-system ecology concepts
3
Operational objectives
EODESM system (1) ECOPOTENTIAL aims at creating a unified framework for ecosystem studies and management of protected areas (PA). Best use of Earth Observation (EO) and additional multi-source (e.g., COs) monitoring data through the development of the Earth Observation Data for Ecosystem Monitoring (EODESM) system EODESM integrates EO data, biophysical variables, and ancillary data for providing Land Cover (LC), habitat and ecosystem maps as well as and change maps. FAO-LCCS2 taxonomy is used, with translations to FAO Land Cover Meta language (LCML) Credit: R. Lucas (UNSW), D4.2

Operational objectives From data to knowledge (2)
EO & Socio-economic Data SDGs Ecosystem Essential Variables Primary Indicators Targets (who, what, where, when) (how) «What-if» Data Information Knowledge Target Assessment EVs creation Business Processes execution Indicators generation
5
Operational objectives Modelling for new services (3)
Assimilate EO data/products in modelling approaches to: Understand ecosystem dynamics and functioning as well as resilience to natural and anthropic pressures; Assess the conservation status of ecosystems and their services; Provide the evidence and knowledge base for nature based solutions to address environmental and societal challenges, with linkages to other EU projects (e.g. ERA_Planet-Strand1); Future PAs delineation Provide open and interoperable access to data and knowledge through a GEO Ecosystem Virtual Laboratory Platform, fully integrated in GEOSS.
