Egypt, Mesopotamia, and India all formed around rivers. China is no exception. The great Chinese civilizations began to form around the Huang He River.

Huang He River Stretches east across the northern section of China into the Pacific Ocean As it travels, it collects rich, yellow soil called loess. This gives the river a “yellow” look. Huang He River is also called the Yellow River because of this.

Chiang Jiang River Valley
People eventually started to move south to the Chang Jiang River valley. The Chang Jiang is also called the Yangtze River

Although China has very fertile river valleys, only about 1/10 of the land is usable for farming. Ancient China was a very isolated civilization. Look at the map on pg Talk with your neighbor, why do you think they were so isolated from other civilizations and cultures? (This would probably be something useful to add to your Comp Bk—hint, hint.)
