What does it mean to be a Steward of Creation?

2
LEARNING INTENTION LI: Identify what stewardship is.
3
Stewards of God’s Creation
The first chapter of the Book of Genesis is the basis of our respect and care for the earth. Genesis describes God as creator of the whole universe. Humans are invited to participate as co-creators and stewards of God’s creation. It is a gift and privilege, but also a great responsibility.

"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth
"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." (Genesis 1:1) Christians believe God created the world and made us its stewards or trustees. When we see the world as a gift from God, we will do our best to take care of it and use it wisely, instead of destroying it. sproutem.com

Saint Francis of Assisi
Patron saint of animals and ecology Known for his love of creation and its Creator. Saw himself as part of the ecosystem, not as a master over and above it. He addressed creatures as ‘sisters’ and ‘brothers’, as his equals, not as subjects to be dominated. He saw himself as a simple servant and caretaker of creation. We should likewise see ourselves as stewards within creation, not as being separate from it.

Pope Francis Read the article about our new Pope’s inspiration for choosing his name. Complete a RAPS analysis. R Read the text A About - What’s it about? P Points - Choose 2 important points to support the main idea. S Summarise - the text in your own words using no more than 20 words. Click on the link to watch a clip on Pope Francis

What could happen if we fail to care for creation?

Discuss What is the author/creator’s message? What mood was created? Which features of the video helped to create the mood? What effect did the music, colour, clarity/focus and background have?
9
LEARNING INTENTION LI: Research what Catholic leaders say about Stewardship in Australia.
10
Can you think of anything that Australians, in particular should be doing to care for our environment?
11
What do Catholic leaders say about stewardship in Australia?
In 2004, the seven Queensland Catholic Bishops released a Pastoral Letter on stewardship called Let the Many Coastlands Be Glad! In this letter the Bishops emphasised a number of important Catholic social teachings, with specific mention of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
13
Your task Read the summarised version of the Bishops’ letter, ‘Let the Many Coastlands Be Glad’. Work in your team to find the meanings of the words in bold in your dictionary. Create a glossary to help readers to understand the vocabulary used.
14
LEARNING INTENTION LI: Find the connection between the Holy Spirit and stewardship.
15
What has the Holy Spirit got to do with stewardship?
16
What is the Holy Trinity?
Why did Pope John Paul talk about ‘signs of the spirit’? Why do we pray ‘in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit’?
17
Three in One The peel is like God the Father, because He protects us.
The flesh is like God the Son, because Jesus is God made flesh. The seeds are like the Holy Spirit because He helps us grow.
18
Church symbols for the Holy Spirit
Water - signifies the Holy Spirit's action in Baptism, a sign of new birth and new life Oil - anointing with oil also signifies the Holy Spirit, a sacramental sign of Confirmation Fire – a symbol of the power and energy of the Holy Spirit’s actions Dove - At the end of the flood, a dove released by Noah returned with a fresh olive-tree branch in its beak as a sign that the earth was again safe. When Jesus came up from the water of his baptism, the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove, came down upon him and remained with him.
19
Your task Conduct an online search for symbols (both modern and traditional) of the Holy Trinity. Why have the symbols been chosen to represent the Trinity? Can you come up with your own design for the Holy Trinity?
20
LEARNING INTENTION LI: Learn what the Bible says about stewardship.
21
What does the Bible say about stewardship?
1 Peter 4:10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. Psalm 95:4-5 In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land
22
What does the Bible say about stewardship?
The Queensland Catholic Bishops chose Psalm 97:1 from the Bible to help them get their message across about protecting the Great Barrier Reef. Work with your partner to find other translations of this Psalm on biblegateway.com
23
LEARNING INTENTION LI: Identify how to be a steward in our school environment.
24
How can we be Stewards of Creation?
25
Brain storm Create a mind map to brain storm all the ways we can care for creation at school. Choose one area that you think needs to be improved (eg. recycling, litter, electricity use, water use). Create a poster to persuade the school community to improve this area. You can use an online/word processing program of your choice.
26
Assessment Click on the image below to watch an example of a presentation that has been made using still photos, text and music to convey a message about stewardship and our environment. You might like to include
27
Assessment – Your Task Take photos around the school that will help you to convey a message about being stewards of creation at St Kevin’s (or the impact of a lack of stewardship on our environment). Use the photos you’ve taken to create a short presentation. Don’t forget to include text and music to help to create a powerful mood and message. Try to use one of the Bible verses you are given in your movie.
