1 Connector: Sort card activity
Place the sentences, words and images under the most appropriate heading. Why will understanding the differences between these two media help you with your artwork? Connector: pair work, interactive activity. Content relates to previous lesson regarding pencil crayon and today’s lesson regarding oil pastel

2 Answers: Colouring Pencils Oil Pastels
Easy to use - work stays neat and tidy Can smudge easily Good for adding colour to small areas Good for adding colour to large areas Hard, sharp tip Soft and oily Good for adding fine details Good for adding texture Pupils will discuss answers to sort card activity in pairs/threes. This screen will be shown to pupils have shared their answers with the class

3 Big picture Level work your work at its current stage
Level others’ work Demonstration How to accurately blend colours with pastels Set target for the lesson Apply what you’ve learnt about oil pastels to your work Final review Have you made progress and achieved your target? Lesson break down of activities will be shared with the class

4 Learning outcomes All will add oil pastel to their mixed media drawing. All will know how to make improvements to their work Most will understand how to apply oil pastel correctly Most will blend different oil pastel colours together. Some will demonstrate accurate, smooth colour blending with oil pastels. Some will add accurate texture and detail Pupils will read out learning outcomes

5 Task 1: Level activity Read the levels sheet and try to work out what level you are currently working at. Write this on the back of your work. VAK level activity: 3 volunteers will stand up and decide what order the work they have been given belongs in; high, middle or low. When the rest of the class have levelled their own work, class will discuss if volunteers have the correct order for the exemplar work.

6 Task 2: High middle or low?
Have the volunteers got the work in the correct order? Do you agree? Do you disagree? Are you unsure? Why? VAK level activity: Pupils will discuss work and then go and stand next to other work around the room to identify levels correctly.

7 What do you think? Can you identify the: Level 4a? Level 4b? Level 3b?
VAK: pupils

8 Demonstration: Using oil pastels correctly
Add darkest colours first, use different types of strokes -short jagged ones, smooth curving strokes, experiment . Press hard where you want a strong colour which wont be mixed with another. Press lightly when you want to softly mix and blend colours over the top. Oil pastels slip and slide over each blending easily so change direction when you add a different colour. Make sure you mix your own colours for example don’t just use a green oil pastel mix blue and yellow to make a different type of green. VAK demonstration: Pupils will watch and listen to best methods of applying oil pastel. Pupil volunteer to read level 4a marking criteria and have an example of 4a work along side demo.

9 ½ way review Using the below targets select one of the below to work towards achieving by the end of the lesson 4a: Smoothly blend oil pastels and try to show several areas of tone 4b: Smoothly blend oil pastels in all areas and try to show some tone 4c: Try hard to smoothly blend oil pastels is many areas 3a: Try not to smudge work when using oil pastels and apply them smoothly.

10 Final review: Peer assessment
Check your partners work against the marking sheet . Are they at the level they wrote down at the beginning of the lesson or have they improved? What new target will you set them?

11 Drawing is mostly accurate and fills the page
Level 4a Drawing is mostly accurate and fills the page Many pencil colours have been used, colours show some mixing and are smoothly blended together Oil pastels show some mixing and changes between one colour and the next is smooth Some accurate detail and texture shown Work is presented neatly Level 4b Drawing is mostly accurate and almost fills the page Many pencil colours have been blended together and are smooth Oil pastels show some blending and but this could be smoother Some texture shown but more could be used Work is well presented Level 4c Drawing is ok but inaccurate in a few places. Pencil colours have been blended together but are not smooth in all places. More tone is needed. Oil pastel show some blending but this needs to be neater and smoother Some texture shown but it could be neater Work is generally neatly presented but could be improved Level 3a Drawing is satisfactory but inaccurate in some places. It may not fill the page Pencil colours have been mixed but changes in direction make it look untidy . Not much tone has been used. Oil pastels have been used but it is not smooth Little or no texture is shown and it could be neater Presentation is ok but could be improve Reference slide showing criteria for the whole piece of work not just today’s lesson
