4 Important definitions
A biomaterial is a nonviable material used in a medical device, intended to interact with biological systems. (David Williams, 1987) biocompatibility: the ability of a material to perform with an appropriate host response in a specific application in the way that it does not provoke rejection by the body to replace/restore the function of the diseased or damaged tissue to facilitate the healing with surrounding host tissue biomaterials include synthetic and natural materials

6 Autograft is a tissue transplanted from one part of the body to another in the same individual.
Allograft is an organ or tissue transplanted from one individual to another of the same species but different genotype. Xenograft is an organ or tissue taken from one species to an unlike species. Tissue Engineering is an interdisciplinary field that applies the principles of engineering and life sciences toward the development of biological substitutes that restore, maintain, or improve tissue function or a whole organ. (Langer and Vacanti 1993) therapeutic application or diagnosis application include the following areas: biomaterials, cells, biomolecules, engineering design, biomechanical aspect of the design and informatics Regenerative medicine is interchangeably used with tissue engineering but strictly speaking the term primarily involves the use of stem cells to restore the tissue/organ function.
