ANTARES
2
ANTARES Detector&Physics Status of construction Detector performance
Preliminary results Budget situation
3
ANTARES detector 12 strings, 900 PMTs float ~60 m ~350 m
Acoustic beacon time calibration LED beacon electronic container Optical modules hydrophone ~100 m shore station electro-optic submarine cable ~ 40 Km 2400 m Junction box anchor 12 strings, 900 PMTs An 13th string dedicated to environmental properties measurements completes the detector
4
ANTARES – Junction Box connections
LINE 5 LINE 3 LINE 4 LINE 1 MILOM LINE 2 Line 6 deployed March 16,2007 Line 7 deployed April 6, 2007 Lines 8, 9 deployed July, 2007 MILOM recovered in April New IL deployed July, 2007 Interlink cables Situation in April 2007
5
Situation in April 2007 375 PMTs now in the DAQ stream IL07
6
Line assembly Modules for line 11 completed September 07
Modules for line 12 completed January 08 (Line 12 has one acoustic sector – top one) Problems with some JB connectors solved (Y cables solution).
7
ANTARES Last connections
Previous plan: Connection lines 6-10 & IL December 07 Connection lines & repair line 4 May 08
8
ANTARES now an operational Neutrino Telescope
Mediterranean Sea, 43° N South pole <25% exposure not visible Less background light Better angular resolution ANTARES now biggest NT in Northern Hemisphere (Effective area very similar to AMANDA) Chance of major original discoveries
9
Autonomous Transponder
Measurement of PMT positions acoustic measurements + use of compasses&tiltmeters Line 1 hydro phones Autonomous Transponder
10
Line Alignment using tiltmeters-compasses + hydrophones
5 position sampling points 25 gradients (tiltmetre data from each storey) can reconstruct line shape
11
Acoustic positioning in Antares
Test results of the 3 recently (re)connected lines : - L4 works nominally (5 Rx + 1 RxTx) - L11 works nominally (5 Rx + 1 RxTx) - L12 works nominally (5 Rx + 1 RxTx) To resume, the status of the AP system on the full Antares Detector : RxTx emitters fully functionnal on BSS - all Rx receivers fully functional located along the lines (almost 60 if concerned LCM are alive) ==> the acoustic positioning is ready to provide data to perform precise alignments. Already available for lines 1-5 for data collected up to December 2007

___ MC ___ Data Atmospheric m reconstruction using alignements
Very preliminary ___ MC ___ Data Data MC*0.61 Rate (Hz) Atmospheric ms Nadir (degrees) Agreement in shape Agreement in rate to within ~10% Integral of data: 0.71 Integral of MC : 0.79
19
m zenith angle distribution after cut
No alignements used !! applied the standard cut: L > -5.3 Very preliminary number of events Neutrino candidates cos q
20
Coincidence rates between adjacent PMTs Main contribution: 40K decays
Time difference (ns)
21
Coincidence rates in the lines
Main contribution: 40K decays But also atm. Muons !!! Coincidence rates in the lines Analysis by D. Zaborov (ITEP) Time difference (ns)
22
Extracting muon rate Main contribution: 40K decays
But also atm. Muons !!! Extracting muon rate Analysis by D. Zaborov Very preliminary ~ 3400 m ~ 3050 m
23
ANTARES Bioluminescence&Efficiency
High bioluminescence rate in March-May 2006 Big improvement starting from June Bioluminescence much lower in 2007 than in 2006 March-May 2007 best ever period for ANTARES
24
ANTARES Budget&MoU New MoU ready since November 2006 (waiting for signatures) Already signed by CNRS, Saclay, Strasbourg, INFN, Nikhef, Bucharest Valencia
25
ANTARES Common Fund Common Fund Budget:
2007 705 kEuro (INFN: 135 kEuro) 2008 450 kEuro (sharing proportional to # of “authors”) (INFN contribution 118 kEuro) “The CF for the years will be agreed upon by the FRB” INFN has fully satisfied its financial commitments for both Construction and CF !!
