1 Grab binders, handouts, returned work & calculators, begin the Do Now
Directions: Use the following balanced reaction to answer questions 1 – 5. 2Na + Cl2  2NaCl 1. Determine the Molar Masses for both Cl2 and NaCl. 2. What is the Molar Ratio between Cl2 and NaCl? 3. If you have 70g of Cl2, how many moles of Cl2 do you have? 4. If you react 2mol of Cl2, how many moles of NaCl would you produce? 5. If you produced 4mol of NaCl, how many grams of NaCl did you make?

2 Stoichiometry Recap Molar Mass = sum of mass #’s of all elements in a compound (g/mol) Mass  Moles = grams ÷ Molar Mass Mole X  Mole Y = use Molar Ratio Moles  Mass = moles x Molar Mass

3

4 N2(g) + 2CO2(g) 2CN(g) + 2O2(g)
Moles  Moles Example 1: N2(g) + 2CO2(g) 2CN(g) + 2O2(g) What is the mole ratio between CO2 and O2? If you start with 3 moles of CO2, how many moles of O2 will you produce? 3. If you start with 5 moles of N2, how many moles of CN will you produce?

5 2NaCl(aq) + Pb(NO3)2(aq)  2NaNO3(aq) + PbCl2(s)
Climbing the Mole Hill Example 2: 2NaCl(aq) + Pb(NO3)2(aq)  2NaNO3(aq) + PbCl2(s) 3. If you produce 30g of PbCl2, how many grams of NaCl did you use?

6 Stoichiometry Debrief
Conversion Factors: Molar Mass Molar Ratio Keep track of your UNITS & COMPOUNDS!

7 Lab 4: Synthesizing Bioplastic
Question: Which polymer, that of corn starch or potato starch, is the best option for Coke® to utilize on their newest line of biodegradable plastic bottles? Directions: 5 min to determine and record WHAT we are trying to accomplish in this lab

8 Lab 4: Synthesizing Bioplastic
Question: Which polymer, that of corn starch or potato starch, is the best option for Coke® to utilize on their newest line of biodegradable plastic bottles? Directions: 15 min to… - Identify textual evidence that support Pre-Lab questions - Formulate a hypothesis on which polymer you believe would be best to use for plastic Coke® bottles.

9 Lab 4: Synthesizing Bioplastic
Background Reading Purpose: - Find textual evidence that… - explains the advantages to using biodegradable plastics - explains the disadvantages of using biodegradable plastics - Define what a polymer is - Characteristics of polymers

10 Lab 4: Synthesizing Bioplastic
Directions: - 45 min to synthesize bioplastic & clean up - Begin your lab report! Clean-Up: - Wipe down and rinse out glass container & spatula thoroughly - Clean all glassware and return materials to their original places - Wipe down your lab bench counter

11 Exit Ticket 6 Directions: You have 10 minutes to complete the Exit Ticket to the best of your ability. You MAY NOT use notes, but you may use a Periodic Table. When finished submit to the class bucket.
