Juliet Nurse In this scene, Shakespeare uses a range of imagery (metaphors & similes) in Juliet’s speeches to convey her frustrated and confused feelings. In groups, look at the following parts of Juliet’s speech: Group 1: Lines 1- 31 Group 2: Lines 44 – 68 Group 3: Lines 73 – 95 Group 4: Lines

Literal & Figurative Language
“I couldn’t get out of bed.” Literal: I physically could not get out of my bed. Figurative: I was exhausted, and couldn’t gather the strength to get out of bed. Read through your section of the scene and highlight any examples of similes & metaphors. Explain both the literal and figurative meanings of each quotation.

Writing about Language
Choose one simile and one metaphor from the scene. Copy the quotations and answer the following: What does it mean? Why has it been used? What is the effect on the audience?
