Fossil worksheet (46A-49A will help) Performance Task
Warm Up: on p.17 Describe the characteristics of a good diagram Explain how to properly compare and contrast two subjects. Date Session # Activity Page 12/5,8 11 Diagram warm up What is a proxy? 17 Climate Proxy Lab…formal grade 18 Homework: Fossil worksheet (46A-49A will help) Performance Task

8.E.2 Understand the history of Earth and its life forms based on evidence of change recorded in fossil records and landforms. 8.E.2.1 Infer the age of Earth and relative age of rocks and fossils from index fossils and ordering of rocks layers (relative dating and radioactive dating) 8.E.2.2 Explain the use of fossils, ice cores, composition of sedimentary rocks, faults, and igneous rock formations found in rock layers as evidence of the history of the Earth and its changing life forms

TLW compare and contrast the history provided by climate proxies and rock layers using video, reading and student diagrams of proxy samples then complete a quick write

Page 17 Proxy: 1. A person authorized to act for another; an agent or substitute. 2. The authority to act for another. 3. The written authorization to act in place of another Paleoclimatology is the study of past climate.. Climate proxies are preserved physical data of the past that stand in (substitute) for direct measurements. These proxies help scientists to reconstruct the climate conditions that prevailed during much of the Earth's history and are used in computer models for earths future.

Lab Sheet

Tree Ring Diagram: Ice Core Diagram:
draw your tree ring, discuss physical characteristics you see, label them on your diagram. Read “Reading the Rings of a Tree”….add descriptions to the physical characteristics in your drawing Ice Core Diagram: draw your ice core, discuss physical characteristics and inclusions you see, label them on your diagram Read “Stories in the Ice”…..add descriptions to the physical characteristics in your drawing

Video For each video clip, write a summary of the evidence found and how it is used. Ice Cores tree ring video

Article Summary Summarize the data provided by the different proxies in the “Article” section of your lab sheet
