Kohlberg’s stages of moral development 1. Obedience and punishment orientation 2. Self-interest orientation 3. Interpersonal accord and conformity 4. Authority and social-order maintaining orientation 5. Social contract orientation 6. Universal ethical principles Calling someone that name is unacceptable because it is against our school rules (4) and you will get into trouble (1). Plus, [Name] won’t want to be your friend (2) and that’s not the way we act in our class community (3). Our class community can’t work well when people use hurtful language (5) and it hurts people (6)

5 Minilecture History of the English Language
“Standard” English (LWC) as we know it is the result of invasion, struggle, assimilation, and technology. What counts as “standard” or “proper” English is determined by the winners in historical struggles and who had control of technologies. AAVE/Ebonics too has a history: invasion/subjugation, struggle, cultural pride All forms of language are cultural identifiers.

13 Small Group Discussion Question
Given the values of communities of color as expressed through community cultural capital as well as AAE, how should we structure classrooms to build on that what students bring to the classroom? What should the classroom environment look like? How should students be assessed? How should curriculum be designed? How should instruction be delivered?

14 School Analysis In groups of 3 or 4 (your choice) share your school analysis. What did you learn? How will you apply this learning to your teaching?
