Entering the United State legally
Entry Visa- Written permission to enter a country. A person can apply for a visa at the US embassy in their country. (An embassy is the official office of a foreign government.) There are several types of visas:

Types of Visas Tourist Visa- Allows entrance for a short period of time. Many countries have agreements so their citizens do not have to go through this timely process.

Types of Visas Work Visa- Allows entrance for work related purposes.
Student Visa- Allows entrance for educational purposes.

Green Card Green Card- Allows its holder to not only live in the United States for an extended period of time, but to also work. It is illegal to hire a non-citizen without a green card.

Political Amnesty Political Amnesty- Usually granted after a person has reached the US or a US Embassy. The person must present that they would be subject to harm if they were returned to their country.

Applying for US Citizenship
Obtain and fill out an application. You must have lived in the US for at least three years prior to applying.

2. Must demonstrate that you are a person of “good moral standard”.

3. Must demonstrate an understanding of the English language including the ability to read, write, and speak English.

4. Take a written test that demonstrates an understanding of the history and government of the United States.

5. Take an oath of allegiance.
