1 Katrin and sustainability.

2 Less is more. Less Saves resources
This mindset takes into account the needs of the user groups, operating environment, financial factors and nature. Decreased consumption, work and hygiene-related risks result in savings, both financially and environmentally – and also increases people's wellbeing. . Less Consumption Hygiene risks Saves resources

3 Katrin saves the environment.
A product that meets the needs best reduces consumption. A properly functioning dispenser decreases consumption, the need for servicing and saves time. Environmental impacts are lower with less transport and consumption of products. All Katrin tissue paper products manufactured in the Nordics carry the Nordic Swan eco-label and all the products manufactured in Germany carry the EU eco-label. Less Consumption Hygiene risks Saves resources

4 Katrin reduces hygiene-related risks.
Hygiene: The right system for washing and drying hands decreases the risk of falling ill. Less infections results in less absence due to sickness, hospital visits and even human lives. This is significant for the society as a whole. Less Consumption Hygiene risks Saves resources

5 Seamless life cycle – no explanations.

6 During the time you spent reading the heading, forests grew enough to provide tissue paper for a year for hundreds of people. The forest law up in the north mandates that for every tree cut down, 4 are planted. Well-managed forests effectively binds carbon dioxide. This helps slow down climate warming. Forest resources are increasing in Nordic. Only 60% of the annual growth in Finland and Sweden was used. In one second, forest growth covers the full-year tissue paper consumption of 70 Europeans. One full-size log provides approximately one cubic metre of wood. This is enough to produce enough tissue paper for 12 Europeans for a year.

7 Wood stock is growing in Northern forests
Did you know that… Finland is the most wooded country in Europe? 86% of Finland’s total land area is forest. Annual growth of forests in Finland is Mm3 Annual loggings amount to about 60 Mm3 Gaining growing stock Zero change Losing growing stock Growing stock data not available Source: FAO

8 Every part of the tree is used for the purpose it suits best
Bark, branch and top refuse Appr. 10% to bioenergy production and by-products Pulpwood Appr. 25% to pulp production Sawlogs Appr. 60% to wood products

9 We know where paper grows.
Because the mills are nearby, we can minimise the environmental load of transport. The origin of the wood raw materials of pulp is 100% verifiable. Most comes from certified forests. All Metsä Tissue mills hold ISO 9001 and ISO certificates.  The Mänttä Mill in Finland was the first tissue paper mill in the world to receive the HACCP certificate, a self-control system for hygiene risks.

10 Four new seedlings planted for every harvested tree
In Finland, the harvested site must be regenerated within three years from the harvesting and thus ensure vitality and future growth of the forest We use native tree species only For every tree that is harvested we make sure that four new ones will replace them for the coming generations Only 2% of Finnish forests are harvested annually

11 Benefits are recycled. Tissue paper silts up in as little as 30 days.
70% of Nordic and German newspapers and copy paper is recycled. When you discard a used paper towel, a new one has already grown to replace it. A single weekend issue of a newspaper provides a kitchen towel roll. The fibre raw material can be recycled 5–7 times. After that, the final product can be used as energy or bio waste. Approximately 50% of Metsä Tissue's fibre raw material is recycled fibre. Katrin tissue papers and packages are also excellent energy waste.

12 Paper towel. Most desired and hygienic.
63% of people prefer to dry their hands with a paper towel. (Intermetra Business & Market Research Group, 2008) Drying one's hands with a paper towel decreases the amount of bacteria. It is superior compared to air drying and fabric towels. (TÜV Produkt und Umwelt GmbH, 2005) The average European consumes approximately 10 kg of tissue paper year. All Katrin products made in the Nordic countries carry the Nordic Swan eco-label. All product made in Germany carry the EU Flower eco label.

13 Katrin and signs of responsibility.
The Nordic Swan eco-label indicates that the environmental impacts of manufacturing the product are low. The label can be granted to a product if its manufacturing meets strict and diverse environmental and quality requirements. The EU eco-label or EU Flower is a voluntary ecolabel scheme established in 1992 by the European Commission. It helps to identify products and services that have a reduced environmental impact throughout their life cycle, from the extraction of raw material through to production, use and disposal.

14 Katrin and signs of responsibility.
The PEFC forest certification label indicates that the fibre raw material used in manufacturing the product is sourced from sustainably managed forests and that its origin is known. Approximately 90% of Finnish commercially managed forests are PEFC-certified. The FSC forest certification label indicates that the fibre raw material used in manufacturing the product is sourced from sustainably managed forests and that its origin is known.

15 Katrin and signs of responsibility.
A product carrying the glass-fork symbol has been shown to be safe for use in contact with foodstuffs in the intended way. Tissue paper products are intended for short-term contact with foodstuffs, such as wiping or drying, while baking and cooking papers are suitable for both cooking and storing food.

16 Katrin and signs of responsibility.
The ISO mark refers to an environmental management system used at the plant manufacturing the product, which is certified according to the requirements of the international standard in question. The system makes the development of environmental matters more effective. These labels indicate that the plant manufacturing the product uses the self-control system better known from the food industry. The system aims to ensure that using the product does not cause any health hazards to the user when it is used in the intended way.   The ISO 9001 mark refers to an quality management system used at the plant manufacturing the product, which is certified according to the requirements of the international standard in question. The system is a good tool for continuous improvement of operations.
