2 Melody The first that appears at the beginning of every staff is a clef symbol. The clef tells you which note goes on each line

3 To learn how to read music in a particular clef, one must first memorize the positions of the notes
Many students prefer to learn lines and spaces separately

4 Treble Cliff E,G,D,B,F: Every Good Boy Does Fine
F,A,C,E: Face (easy to remember)

5 Bass Cliff G,B,D,F,A: Good boys do fine always
A,C,E,G,: All cows eat grass

6 In common notation, a note can be sharp, flat, or natural.
Sharp: raises the pitch by ½ step Flat: lowers by ½ step Natural: does not affect note
