1 The Police Learning Objective: To explore the role and importance of the Police Force in Britain. I can explain the role of the police. I can explore the day to day role of a police officer. I can create an advert to raise awareness of the work of PCSOs in the community. Explain to students we will be continuing with their campaigns this lesson ready to total up their scores at the end.

2 What would happen if we didn’t have the police?
Pose the question ‘what would happen if we didn’t have a police force?’ There are images on the board to help get students thinking. Hopefully students will begin to identify the negatives of not having a police force so lead into why they are important and what they do.

3 What do the police do? Protect People and Property
Help to prevent and reduce crime Deal with emergencies Patrol the streets to make people feel safe Pose the question ‘what do the police do?’ and explain the role of the police and what they do using the PPT. Keep order, allow freedom of speech and allow peaceful protests Manage traffic and make sure people are safe on the roads Investigate Crimes Gather and prepare information to prosecute people in court Support victims of crime

4 PCSOs in the Local Community
Local policing teams are there to listen to your concerns and act upon the issues that matter most to you, helping you to feel more confident in your community. Who are your local PSCOs? Now focus on the role of PCSOs who work in local communities. There is a link to a newspaper article explaining their work you can use for further information. Ask if students know who their local PCSOs are. Show students their three PCSOs in Hedge End using the information on the website links. 6 Being a police officer Watch part of the first episode of ‘Rookies’ which follows 7 trainee police officers to see what their day to day duties and challenges involve. What does some of their day to day duties involve? What do you think is challenging about being a police officer? To allow students to gain a more in depth understanding of the role the police play show part of the first episode of ‘Rookies’ 25 mins approx.) where cameras followed people training to enter the police force. When you have finished watching ask students their thoughts on what they’ve seen using the questions on the PPT. Think back to your careers lessons – what skills do you need to be a police officer? Why do people want to become police officers?

8 PCSO PR Campaign There are people in the local community who don’t know who their PCSOs are or the important work they do. You have been tasked with advertising their work so people have a greater understanding and respect for them. You might want to: Create a PCSO logo and slogan Write a radio jingle Create a poster
