Comma Rule #3: Non-Essential Phrases/Clauses
Use a pair of commas to separate phrases or clauses that are not essential to the meaning of a sentence. Example: Buzz Lightyear a toy who thinks he’s a real space hero lives in Andy’s Room. , ,

Examples of Rule #3 My dog an adorably ratchet pup named Coconut loves to snuggle and eat treats. English I the greatest class of all time is a requirement for all freshman students. Napoleon Dynamite a lover of tater tots is Ms. Comiskey’s best friend.

Rule #4: Items in a Series
Use commas to separate items in a series/list. Example: My perfect weekend includes pizza Netflix sweatpants and puppy snuggles. , , ,

Because I love too write I spend last weekend writing essays stories and poems. Thornton the school I go to is real awesome and I love to go there to learn and grow. Coconut who love to eat poop on walks really needs a bath but don’t want to take one.

Comma Rule #5: Direct Address
Use a comma when a person is directly addressed in a sentence. This can be shown by using a person’s name: Napoleon go get me a pizza. Or without using a specific name and starting with “yes” or “no”: Yes you do smell like cheese today. , ,

Examples: , Please make me a funfetti cake Queen Elizabeth. Yes you can buy me that awesome pony. Why Coconut did you eat all my shoes? Sorry Captain America I can’t marry you. , , , , ,

Comma Rule #6: Dialogue/Quotations
Use commas when writing direct quotations and dialogue. “I love to write essays ” said every one of Ms. Comiskey’s students. “I wish ” declared every student “that we could write essays every day.” , , ,

Examples: , “I ate so many cookies last night” said Sassypants “and they were super delicious.” “I wish I could be friends with Ms. Comiskey!” said Taylor Swift. “Sweatpants are the best!” shouted the smartest person ever. “We love to write essays” explained the students “because they are so fun.” , , ,
