3 About IB Created in 1968 as a pre-university course of study for highly motivated high school students The grading system is criterion-referenced, which means that each student’s performance is measured against well-defined levels of achievement A common curriculum which emphasizes critical thinking, intercultural understanding and a variety of points of view

Language A1 (English HL) Language B (French SL, HL, Spanish SL, HL) Individuals & Societies (History of the Americas HL) Experimental Sciences (Biology HL, Chemistry SL, Physics SL, Environmental Systems SL) Mathematics (Math Studies SL) The Elective (Psychology SL, Philosophy SL, Social and Cultural Anthropology, or 2nd science)

8 The three levels of IB – Level 1
Taking IB Courses as coursework only College-level work A serious approach to coursework Internal assessments are part of course

Working toward a Certificate College-level work A serious approach to coursework Internal assessments are part of course External assessments and May exam Recognized as Academy Scholar (1-2 IB or AP Exams) Recognized as Academy Distinguished Scholar (3 or more IB or AP Exams)

Working toward the IB Diploma Take exams in each of the six subject groups and achieve a minimum score of 24 The extended essay – a 4000 word research paper CAS – Weekly commitment to creativity, action, and service work TOK – additional class which explores relationships among the disciplines

11 Our Expectations of an IB Scholar:
Attend class regularly Attend review sessions scheduled Attend the pre-exam meeting Maintain grades of “C” or above Complete internal assessments Take the exams in May in a serious manner Abide by the academic honesty policy.

12 What makes up an IB exam? Internal Assessments: graded by the teacher, sampled and moderated by IB External Assessments: tests/papers/projects prepared during course but graded by IB examiners the written papers in May, graded by IB examiners

13 What’s the difference between SL and HL exams?
Standard Level (SL) students have spent a recommended 150 hours in a course – basically one year courses Higher Level (HL) students have spent a recommended 240 hours in a course – the two year courses (English, History, Biology, Spanish, French)

14 IB TEST REGISTRATION Part One
Decide what IB tests to take; if you have questions, ask me Complete the registration form Drop the registration form off at the IB Office in room D110 I will sign the registration form indicating that it is correct and return to student

15 Registration Part 2 – from now to November 6th
Take the signed registration form to the bookkeeper’s office to pay with cash, credit card, personal check, cashier’s check made out to Tracy High. If paying by credit card, the person on the credit card must be present when paying. Bring the registration form with signed scholar agreement along with the receipt to Academies Office for processing. Mr. Reese will then register you through IB Information System (IBIS) for exams.

16 After I input the registration,
Students will receive their registration report. They need to Check all the information carefully to prevent errors in candidate details or errors in levels of exams being taken If there are errors, correct them and return correction to Academies office by November 15th.

17 How do IB exams help the student?
Provide students with a strong, focused finish to their high school education College admission Applications often ask specifically about IB/AP courses and tests taken Colleges are looking for the rigor of the coursework taken in high school Possible college units – see

20 Can IB Students take AP exams?
Our students have some success in taking AP exams if they are in AP classes and they study particularly for those exams. Registration for AP exams begins in January. Teachers will let the students know when to register.

21 Free and Reduced Lunch Qualified and Verified Students
TUSD has made a commitment to cover the cost of both the IB Reg. Fee ($172) and the IB Testing Fee ($119) for all students who qualify. There is still a $5 fee for each exam taken for Free and Reduced Lunch Qualified Students.

22 Testing in May - Conflicts
Magic Mountain Senior Field Trip is on May 17th and 18th. Senior Beach Day is on May 16th. Students will still be required to sit for their exams if there is a conflict due to sports or extra-curricular activities.
