1 The Beginning of the Universe
Past and Present Scientific theories

2 Geocentric Model (Earth centered)
Ptolemy Geocentric Model (Earth centered) In 140 AD, Greek astronomer, Ptolemy, developed a geocentric (Earth center) model of our universe that was the accepted view for about 1500 years! Some Greeks believed in an Heliocentric (Sun center) model of the universe but it was not widely accepted

3 Heliocentric (Sun centered)
Nicolaus Copernicus Heliocentric (Sun centered) In 1542, astronomer, Nicolaus Copernicus, helped to bring the heliocentric view to the forefront

4 From Solar System… Galileo Galilei Map of the Moon
Considered the father of modern science, Galileo Galilei ( ) made major contributions to the fields of physics, astronomy, cosmology, mathematics and philosophy. He invented an improved telescope that let him observe and describe the moons of Jupiter, the rings of Saturn, the phases of Venus, sunspots and the rugged lunar surface. His advocacy of a heliocentric universe brought him before religious authorities in 1616 and again in 1633, when he was forced to recant and placed under house arrest for the rest of his life

5 Galileo Galileo Telescope
Telescope introduced to astronomy in by Galileo. Made his own lenses based on descriptions. Able to get magnifications of about 30, with very narrow field of view. He could only see about ¼ of the Moon's surface at a time. First man to see the craters of the moon, sunspots, 4 large moons of Jupiter, rings of Saturn, phases of Venus.

6 …to the Universe Albert Einstein Theory of Relativity
In 1917, Albert Einstein developed the Theory of Relativity Einstein believed that gravity warped spacetime (light years), pulling heavenly bodies together in revolving ellipses. Eventually, these revolving elliptical bodies will collapse on themselves. In 1930, Albert Einstein later adopted the theory of George Lemaitre, an astronomer and priest, stating that the Galaxy and Universe are actually moving away, getting bigger.

7 Hubble Space Telescope
Edwin Hubble Hubble Space Telescope Edwin Hubble was one of the leading astronomers of the twentieth century. His discovery in the 1920s that countless galaxies exist beyond our own Milky Way galaxy revolutionized our understanding of the universe and our place within it.

8 The Big Bang NASA spacecraft such as the Hubble Space Telescope and the Spitzer Space Telescope continue measuring the expansion of the Universe. One of the goals has long been to decide whether the Universe will expand forever, or whether it will someday stop, turn around, and collapse in a "Big Crunch?"

9 Hubble discovers Andromeda
Andromeda Galaxy The Andromeda Galaxy is a spiral galaxy millions of light-years from Earth. It is the nearest major galaxy to the Milky Way and was often referred to as the Great Andromeda Nebula in older texts. Hubble calculated that the galaxy was actually 1.5 million light-years away
