Laboratory Rules Place bags out of the way, blazers on hooks, stools under benches when doing practical work. Listen carefully to instructions, never touch apparatus before being instructed to do so. Work on a neat and tidy bench space. Do not run or push past people. Report breakages and faulty apparatus immediately. No eating or drinking at any time. Wear goggles when instructed to do so.

However all physicists in the past have relied upon taking accurate observations.
16
Learning Objectives Accurately use correct equipment to take some measurements. (level 3) Suggest the appropriate units of measurement for measuring different objects. State the number of mm in a cm, m and km. List some real life applications of physics. (level 4) Convert between mm, cm, m and km. (level 5) Use this skill to calculate the actual size of objects drawn to scale (level 5/6)
17
2nd starter How many lengths of A4 paper would a cow measure?
Link to the need for standard units of measurement
18
Your task… Use the correct piece of equipment to accurately measure the following: Someone’s height. The length of your little finger. The dimensions of your homework diary. The thickness of your earlobe. Estimate the distance from school to your home. Write the name of the object and it’s length in your books Discuss mm, cm, m, km
19
Length Length is measured in millimetres mm centimetres cm metres m
kilometres km We shall most often be using mm. All measurements of length should be as accurate as possible. If a ruler has mm on it, you should measure to the nearest mm!

How to convert between different units of length
mm cm divide by 10 cm mm multiply by 10 cm m divide by 10 m cm multiply by 1000 m Km divide by 1000 Km m multiply by 10 Now complete the first 5 conversions on the sheet. If you find it easy, do the last 5 as well. Otherwise, do the first 10 only.
