Chapter 21 Section 1

A chemical reaction is a process in which one or more substances are changed into new substances.
A reactant, in a chemical rxn, is the substance that reacts. A product, in a chemical rxn, is the new substance formed . A chemical equation is a shorthand method to describe chemical rxn using chemical formulas and other symbols. A coefficient is a number in a chemical eqution that represents the number of units of each substnce taking part in a chemical reaction.

The basic general equation for chemistry is :

Conservation of mass states that matter can neither be created nor destroyed, it only changes form.
Lavoisier is the father of modern chemistry, he did experiments that supported conservation of mass, he was able to link chemistry to biological functions, and he helped standardize the naming of elements and compounds.

If you start out with 20g of water and then separate it into hydrogen and oxygen, how much does the hydrogen and oxygen have to add up to? If you ended up with g of oxygen how much hydrogen must have been produced?
6
Write the following in shorthand:
One oxygen gas unit plus two hydrogen gas units produces one unit of liquid water. One carbon gas unit plus two oxygen gas units produces one unit of carbon dioxide gas.
