In Writing Major Projects College Applications (Narrative)
Descriptive Writing Functional (Business Letters, etc.) Literary Response Narratives Persuasion Research (Expository) We’ll be discussing the 8 parts of speech in the first quarter. Each week we’ll go over a different part of speech. Your bellwork each day is meant to enhance the lessons on the parts of speech so you will completely learn each part of speech. Once we know all the parts of speech, we’ll begin diagramming sentences. This will help you to better understand sentence structure and help you write more vibrant, expressive sentences.
20
In Readings Novels Short Stories Poetry Epic Poetry Sonnets
Pastoral Poems As part of sentence diagramming, phrases group parts of the sentence together. These phrases will ensure you write sentences grammatically correct.
21
In Grammar Parts of Speech Phrases Clauses Sentences
Prepositional, Adjective, Noun, Verb Clauses Independent and Subordinate Sentences Simple, Compound, Complex Along with phrases, clauses work together to build complex and compound sentences. An independent clause can stand alone. In other words, a sentence is an independent clause. A Subordinate clause cannot stand alone. Adding a subordinate clause to an independent clause creates a complex sentence, which will make your writing more interesting.
22
In Traits Ideas Organization Voice Word Choice Sentence Fluency
Conventions There are three parts to a paragraph – the topic sentence, the body of the paragraph, and the conclusion. If the paragraph is part of an essay or other multi-paragraph writing, you need to transition from idea to idea to ensure your audience is not confused. During the year, you will become intimately familiar with the 6 Traits of Good Writing.

Preparation for AIMS Reading and Writing I have to know you learned the information. So, there will be a test on each part of speech. I may combine some of the tests, especially the more minor parts of speech such as Conjunctions and Interjections. You need to study AND you need to retain! There will be a final test on all parts of speech – most likely in December.

Classroom Expectations
Respect Self and Others Challenge Yourself Be Prepared for Class Work Cooperatively Own Your Education Classroom Rules SLIDE 28 Respect Self and Others I will NOT tolerate disrespect. Teasing, name calling, disparaging comments about ethnicity, religion, race, age, gender, sexual orientation, etc. are all signs of disrespect. Everyone in this classroom is equal. Absolutely no one is any better than anyone else! Celebrate Equality! Challenge Yourself If you want to be a success in the future you need to challenge yourself now! Dare to Know everything there is to know about writing and communicating and you will find success! Be Prepared for Class Do your homework, and bring everything you need for class to class! Work Cooperatively Help each other. Learn from your classmates mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, but there is no sense in making the same mistake someone else already has made. Learn from your classmates and let them learn from you! Own Your Education Without good communication skills including oral and written communication, you will not find success in your future. This is your education, not mine.
29
1. Respect Self and Others
Show respect to me and your classmates Do NOT talk back Unacceptable Language “Shut up” Profanity Other inappropriate language for a classroom As part of respecting yourself and others, there are certain phrases and comments I will not allow in this classroom. They are offensive to some of your fellow students and to me. I have family members and friends who are gay. There is no such word as Fricken. And telling your classmates to “shut up” is just rude!
