1 Marine Biology DAY 4 Drill: Explain why you would need to research fish before placing them all into one aquarium. Topic: Marine Food chains and Food webs Essential Q: Why is a balance energy supply necessary for survival? Agenda: Identify the parts of a marine food chain and food web Vocabulary Cards for Review

2 Marine Food Web - and – Food Chain

3 What is a food chain? A food chain is a straight line of who eats who
They give special names to the order: Producer  Primary Consumer  Secondary Consumer  Tertiary Consumer  Quaternary Consumer How is a producer different from a consumer? Producer: Makes their own E (energy) from the Sun Consumers: Eats another organism to get their E (energy)

4 Food Pyramid How can a food chain be converted into a food pyramid?
Has the least E Food Pyramid Trophic Level 5 Quaternary How can a food chain be converted into a food pyramid? The levels of a pyramid are called trophic levels Producers are at the bottom and that is now called trophic level 1 Which trophic level has the most energy? Explain. The bottom has the most space and contains the most energy (energy decreases as you move upward) Trophic Level 4 Tertiary Trophic Level 3 Secondary Trophic Level 2 Primary Trophic Level 1 Producer Has the most E

5 Food Chains Food chains will always begin with a producer!  Example:
Phytoplankton  Zooplankton  Sunfish  Small Shark  Large Shark The  shows the flow of energy and points to the organism getting food Food chains will always begin with a producer! 

6 Food Chain What would happen if ALL of the zooplankton died?
Large shark What would happen if ALL of the zooplankton died? What would happen if there was an OVER POPULATION of sunfish? Small shark Sunfish Zooplankton Phytoplankton

7 What is a food web? A food web is all food chains put together where multiple organisms can feed on the same prey! This allows for competition. If an organism will not adapt to a new food source it will die! If an organism will adapt to a new food source it will live and possibly migrate and evolve!!

8 Food Chain/Web Worksheet
As a group (or individually) answer the questions on both sides of the worksheet Use your notes, books, and peers. You have a quiz next class!!! Use your worksheets and notes to study for your quiz on: Ocean Zones  Marine Lifestyles  Symbiotic Relationships  Foodchain/web When you are done and have all questions/comments/concerns answered you can continue working on your aquarium project that is due 10/2/17
